Hopefully the youngster will be joined by more signings this Summer

With the World Cup group stages reaching their climax, it’s time to take stock of any potential transfer targets that United may be linked with.

Ander Herrera has completed his move from Atletico Bilbao. Contrary to reports saying the transfer had fallen through over the release clause, it appears that Herrera himself paid the fee to secure his transfer to Old Trafford. The Spanish midfielder joins on a four year deal, with an optional extra year extension. For reds eager to see his debut, Ryan Giggs confirmed his attendance on the pre-season tour as his first outings in a red shirt.

Euphoria over a midfield signing over, who else could be on their way to Old Trafford this summer.

Well, given Louis Van Gaal’s master management with the Netherlands, there really is no shortage of players being linked. United have so far been linked with almost the entire Dutch squad, but some rumours stronger than others. Arjen Robben continues to be linked, but perhaps given his age United may view it as against their policy. Blind and Bruno Martins Indi are other prominent figures who have excelled in Brazil Van Gaal is also suggested to be considering.

United however must be adamant to prevent last summer’s farce, losing out to big name targets before panic buying Fellaini on deadline day. With Van Gaal in charge, you expect this not to be the case. Furthermore, Ed Woodward deserves credit where due with the Herrera signing. Nothing was leaked until the Bilbao newspaper spoke earlier this week.

United’s big money signing of Luke Shaw for a reported £31 million shows the club’s intentions. A left back however was needed, as Alexander Buttner has secured his transfer to Dinamo Moscow. As Patrice Evra ages, Shaw may be an expensive, yet sensible addition to the squad to aid learn from the vintage Frenchman.

Defence seems an area in need of rebuilding, with Rio and Vida gone, an extra centre back is required. Mats Hummels has been continually spread around, but with Germans at the World Cup, tieing up a deal seems a way of yet. Disappointment too as long term rumoured target Ezequiel Garay of Benfica is Zenit bound for a cut price £15million, far lower than the £35million United were quoted.

United will no doubt look to reinforce their squad through the Summer, with patches all over the pitch in need of strengthening. Having said that, the dead cert transfer rumour of Wesley Sneijder has already appeared. A Summer of transfer frenzy awaits in the eyes of many reds, but for now we must wait for Van Gaal to pick his targets.
