Mandzukic heading to Old Trafford?

United are on the verge of signing Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic according to the latest reports in both British and Spanish media.

The Sun notes that Mandzukic could be on his way to Old Trafford, while other papers such as the Mail claim the former Bayern Munich striker was a target for the Reds even before Louis Van Gaal arrived.

Mandzukic got off to a blistering start to his Atletico career, bagging 20 goals by February but since then he hasn’t scored since and rumours of a fall out with manager Diego Simeone persist. At 29 the Croatian is hardly the young striker that many claim United need but as has been shown with the signings of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao over the past few years, the Old Trafford hierarchy are willing to sanction a deal for players approaching 30 if they believe they can move the club forward.

48 goals in two seasons at Bayern and a further twenty with Atletico show that Mandzukic is capable of scoring at the very top levels and that may be enough to convince Louis Van Gaal, age ain’t nothing but a number.
