Mark Hughes’ credentials as a manager were never really in question.

After an illustrious playing career at Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Old Trafford again, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn Rovers, plus 72 caps for Wales, he was clearly a man that had experience.

His first managerial post was as Wales manager in 1999 and he remained in that role until 2005. During his reign, there was a definite improvement in the national team’s fortunes, culminating in near qualification for the 2004 European Championships.

After leaving the Wales job, Hughes went to Blackburn Rovers and helped them steer clear of relegation, whilst guiding them to the FA Cup semi-final. The following year was a top six finish in the Premier League and European qualification. A number of quality names then signed on at Ewood Park (Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley were just two) and Hughes kept the team up in the top ten – albeit bottom of the disciplinary charts.

After Sven-Goran Erikson’s dismissal at Manchester City in 2008, the Citizens’ owners only wanted one man, and that was Hughes. The foundation for today’s success probably started with ‘Sparkie’, as he was given money to buy players still associated with City today – Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta were amongst the early signings. Once the Abu Dhabi Group invested in the club, money was no object, but it didn’t prevent some the poorest away performances of the season and a 10th place finish. On the flip side, City were tremendous at home and also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. Despite star names such as Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure signing, it didn’t resolve the two wins in eleven games in 2009 and in December, Hughes was sacked. Roberto Mancini stepped in.

Roy Hodgson left Fulham in 2010 and Hughes was appointed manager. However, less than a year later and Hughes had resigned. Following his departure, he said, “As a young, ambitious manager I wish to move on to further my experiences.” Fulham owner Mohamed Al-Fayed hit back at Hughes for questioning the club’s ambition; Al Fayed called Hughes a “strange man” and a “flop” and says he rescued him from becoming a forgotten man after being sacked by Manchester City. In September 2013, Hughes admitted he made a mistake in leaving Fulham when he did.

Across London and once again it just didn’t work out for the Welshman. In nine months, Hughes was sacked as QPR manager after compiling a number of high profile signings that just did not gel. Results were worse than poor – that season started with a 5-0 home defeat to Swansea City. 12 matches without victory signalled the end for Hughes and seven months later he was appointed as manager of Stoke City.

It was clear that after the disappointment of QPR, that Hughes had a point to prove and it appears that the Potters are benefiting from the wisdom he offers. His style of play is different to his predecessor, Tony Pulis, and with the amount of better players now adorning the red and white, it is clear that chairman Peter Coates is backing his man with the necessary funds. They are not a relegation-threatened team, but one that very much holds their own. Tough opponents in terms of skill and physically imposing, they didn’t have the best start to the season, but have gradually and quietly improved. Sadly, Stoke have hit something of a slump in recent matches, though. Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Everton made it four losses in six league games in 2016 after ending the old year with back-to-back victories over Manchester United and the Toffees. Chairman Coates is surely confident that Hughes will sort out Stoke’s slump sooner rather than later, and new record signing Giannelli Imbula brings cause for optimism. But, it will need to be a team effort this weekend against an unpredictable Bournemouth team as Stoke look to steer the ship back on course.

Indeed it could be said that Hughes’ way has made people sit up and take notice of how well the team play and the kind of job that has been done, because his name appears in the list of managers to potentially replace Louis van Gaal in many fans’ debates. A firm favourite, it’s somewhat inevitable that one day he will return to Old Trafford in the hot seat.
In the Mirror, Hughes said, “There’s a lot of speculation. That goes with the territory. It’s probably better to be talked up than talked down. I’ve had both, and I know which I prefer. It is what it is. It’s speculation. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Stoke were the ultimate long-ball bores under Pulis, but Hughes has turned the Britannia Stadium side into a slick passing unit, attracting talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri and Bojan Krkic to the club.

Stoke is a perfect fit for Mark Hughes. He’s pressed his style of play into his players’ minds, he now has ‘his’ players and Stoke are an attractive top half of the table club. It’s bound to happen one day – a bigger club coming calling – especially now that Hughes has re-built his reputation and done it well.

This weekend’s early match features Sunderland playing host to Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are looking to get out of the bottom three, but have a daunting task playing a Manchester United team that has been improving over the last few weeks.

The Red Devils currently sit in fifth in the table, six points behind City for a top four spot after drawing with Chelsea last Sunday. United need to take three points wherever they can, especially in fixtures like this if they want to qualify for next year’s Champions League.

Sunderland came back from 2-0 late last week against Liverpool to earn a point, and are looking for a similar result against United this weekend. They’ll have to get past David De Gea, who has proved to be the Premier League’s top goalie this season.

Here are five things to know ahead of the match…

Inter Milan full-back Yuto Nagatomo has revealed that he rejected a January move to Manchester United.

The 83-cap Japan international plies his trade at left-back for the San Siro giants, and has developed into an important player since his 2011 move to the club.

And it appears that he emerged as a target for United last month, during a period in which Louis van Gaal’s backline was hit with a series of injuries.

The left flank had become an area of genuine concern, but Nagatomo has claimed that he turned down the chance to move to Manchester:

“I like everything about Inter, I want to stay here and renew my contract,” he told Inter’s TV channel (via Metro).

“I turned down an offer from Manchester United, as my desire is to stay here. I have an excellent rapport with Roberto Mancini.”

Van Gaal has been forced to use a number of unorthodox options in defence this term, with left-sided defender Daley Blind at centre-back, while youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been called upon.

Nagatomo joined Inter from FC Tokyo in 2011 following a season on loan in Italy with Cesena and is a regular in Japan’s senior squad.

Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi has revealed that he’s “ready to reject Manchester United” should the Old Trafford side come calling for him this summer.

The Argentine striker has been aligned with the Red Devils of late, with reports having already claimed that Louis van Gaal’s side made an unsuccessful move for his signature during the last transfer window.

With 10 goals in 21 Serie A games to his name this term, Icardi is seen as a key man at the San Siro, and was even promoted to club captain by manager Roberto Mancini ahead of the current campaign.

Although Inter are by no means guaranteed to reach the Champions League for next season – which has led to suggestions they could sell their South American marksman – Icardi has revealed that he’s eager to stay put:

“I want to stay at Inter at all costs,” he told Corriere dello Sport (via The Mirror). “I am also ready to reject Manchester United. With Mancini there’s no problem, we will do well.”

Icardi is known for his industrious and energetic approach, which is not dissimilar to that of ex-Liverpool man Luis Suarez.

It’s time for another round of Premier League fixtures as we look at three players you should consider when picking your Fantasy Premier League team ahead of Gameweek 26.

As always, some notable fixtures that should be considered when making your decisions are Sunderland versus Manchester United, Aston Villa versus Liverpool, and Everton versus West Bromwich Albion.

Last week we selected Reds star Adam Lallana, Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer, and Southampton keeper Fraser Forster, with all three giving you decent points.

Lallana picked up a total of nine points after netting a goal, Wimmer managed to register his second clean sheet with seven points, while Forster has now gone five games without conceding, tallying another six.

Picking differentials will always be seen as a risk, but if your gamble does pay off, you’re bound to make up some room or even overtake the players ahead of you in your respective leagues.

So, whether you agree with our selections or not, here are three Fantasy Premier League differentials for you to consider ahead of Gameweek 26.

Manchester United are set to receive a bid for out-of-favour midfielder Marouane Fellaini from AC Milan this summer, according to reports from the Mirror.

Fellaini was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window, with a host of big clubs aligned with moves for his services.

AC Milan made an enquiry in regards to bringing him over on loan, but the Red Devils only wanted to sell the Belgium international outright for £24million.

United’s high asking price for the ex-Everton midfielder saw the Rossoneri turn their attentions elsewhere, but it is expected that Milan will come back in the summer and are preparing a £12million bid.

The offer may be half the value being asked by Man United, but with the 28-year-old struggling for regular playing time at Old Trafford, the Red Devils could accept the offer to take Fellaini’s £100,000-a-week wage bill off their books.

Fellaini has made 25 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring two goals.

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has claimed that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will be the next big-name transfer to the Chinese Super League, according to reports from the Mirror.

Players all over the continent have been heavily linked with a move to China in recent weeks, with the likes of Chelsea star Ramires and former Arsenal winger Gervinho both making the switch last month.

Blues midfielder Oscar was even subject of a £57million bid during the January window, showcasing the massive spending power of the Far East.

However, Sven Goran Eriksson, who is managing Shanghai SIPG, believes that Rooney will be the next big target for clubs in the Chinese League.

“Who doesn’t want Rooney? But I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to leave Manchester United. Not for this moment, anyway,” he said.

The Swede went on to claim that even global superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could make a move to China in the near future.

He added: “Sooner or later, we are going to see names like Ronaldo, Messi and Rooney in this league — players on this level.”

Rooney is having a poor season by his usual high standards, but the England international is only six goals away from Man United’s all time record of 250 goals currently held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is confident he will remain at the club if he can guide them to a fourth place finish, according to reports from the Mirror.

Van Gaal has been heavily linked with an exit in recent weeks, with the club reportedly in negotiations with ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho amid the Red Devils’ struggles.

However, with one year remaining on his contract, the Dutchman believes that if he can complete the objective of qualifying for next season’s Champions League campaign, he will remain at the United helm.

He will have a tough task doing so though, with his side six points behind title challengers Manchester City, who currently sit in fourth.

And Van Gaal has already shown his frustrations amid speculation of Mourinho’s impending arrival, even exclaiming to a reporter than he should be the one sacked instead.

United have a chance to close their gap with City when the travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland on Saturday.

To be honest, most people will feel for Gary Neville at this moment in time. Who likes to go off and try something and fail? No-one. So whether you are a Manchester United fan or not, it’s a shame that this isn’t working out for him.

And it isn’t in spades. No La Liga win in over two months. The only wins were in the Copa del Rey, until the 7-0 thrashing by Barcelona. Valencia fans must have been wondering ‘what next?’ ever since the Englishman came in as manager on a short-term contract.

It appears obvious that Neville will be leaving in the summer, but reports (via ESPN) suggest that he will be safe until then, as Valencia slip further down the table.

For the Manchester United legend, this must be the absolute kick in the guts. He must have gone there with his own high standards, his own ambitions and expectations, the will to win – as he did as a player, only to see it all start to crumble about him.

England’s No. 2 is in danger of losing that role, especially if Roy Hodgson doesn’t stay. If he were to lose his place in the England set-up, some might suggest that was a good thing bearing in mind the defensive display against Spain, ironically.

However, with the experience Neville has, our game surely needs someone of his quality and his stature, but why is he finding his first test in management so hard? Could it be that Valencia was too big a step for a first role? Would it have been better to start at a non-league or lower division club and work his way up, as many have done before him? It helped that he knows the owner, Peter Lim. The Singaporean businessman also has a 50% stake in Salford City with Neville and Co. Lim was interviewed by the Mestalla club (via the Daily Mail) and confirmed that Neville wasn’t picked because of their friendship.

“I picked Gary not because he is a good friend; Gary is a good coach, who happened to be a friend. I think that has to be very clear to everyone,”

“I look at him, he has got the potential in him, I knew him for a while and his football knowledge is tremendous. He is a top pundit in the UK. I chose him because of his knowledge of football and everything that is around football.I know a lot of people say “oh no, he has never been a coach,” but I do believe that he has got the ability to become a good coach.”

You can’t fault Lim’s logic, but sadly, this is looking like a disaster that Neville needs to turn around.

With the fans openly calling for his dismissal after the defeat to Real Betis, no league wins and a drop, worse than his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo, who has almost certainly lost the dressing room, this scenario is doing Neville no favours. Any thoughts of succeeding Hodgson must now be thoughts of some far off point in the future, along with similar thoughts at Old Trafford.

It was never going to be easy, that’s for sure. First managerial role he takes is a big one and more perplexing is the fact that it is abroad. The club were already in some turmoil behind the scenes with all kinds of politics at boardroom level taking place. The super agent Jorge Mendes is said to be behind some of the issues, but successors are already being lined up for the beleaguered Neville.

Neville walked into a club with injuries to key players and a losing mentality, so is all of this surprising and his fault?

Maybe experience and being a good pundit – analysing players and a game – don’t translate easily from the English league to the Spanish, but with a reputation in bits, where does Gary Neville go from here?

Manchester United have been handed a huge transfer boost ahead of the summer window, with Sport claiming that Real Madrid are considering selling James Rodriguez.

The Colombia international has emerged as a target for the Red Devils in recent times, with the financially powerful Old Trafford side set for a huge off-season in terms of player recruitment.

Rodriguez only signed for Real on the back of his fine showings in the 2014 World Cup, but after a good debut campaign his form has dipped this season, and reports claim that his attitude is a worry for the La Liga side.

Club president Florentino Perez is aware of the player’s talent and global appeal, however, unless his performances and approach change he will look to sell this summer.

Interestingly, a big sale could help the Spaniards in terms of their hopes of landing Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who would be a direct replacement.
