Does Wazza make the top five?

Does Wazza make the top five?

Since Wayne Rooney scored that sensational goal to win the derby early Saturday afternoon. There’s been an ongoing debate to wether or not it was the best goal in Uniteds ever growing history.

I don’t doubt it is probably up there in the top 5.

Here are five of my favourite goals United have ever  scored.
Champions League Semi-Final
21 April, 1999, Stadio Delle Alpi

Roy Keane heads United back into the game with that famous commentary from Clive Tydsley: “Roy Keane with a captains goal” Juventus were 2-0 up in only 11 minutes, Inzaghi scoring after 6 minutes, and then poaching a second after a deflection off stam. Keane put united in the driving seat and with yorke and cole scoring a goal a peice united were through to the champions league final!!

2. FA Cup final 11 May 1996 wembley stadium

United met their bitter rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup final at wembley there was a massive build up to the game as only a few days before United had won our 3rd premier league trophy in four years. With Liverpool not winning a trophy since 1992- ironically being the FA Cup- it meant this game was of huge significance and not least bragging rights!

The game was pretty much dominated by United who were asking question of the then liverpool goalkeeper David James. However, with only five minutes left on the clock,  James tried to punch a corner clear. The ball landed just outside the penalty area, at the feet of United captain Eric Cantona, he shot goalwards, through the crowded penalty area and the ball nestled in the back of the goal, winning the game for United. Cantona had not really been in the game, but true to his form popped up with his usual majestic feet to score a sublime volley.

3. United v Bradford 25th March 2000 Valley Parade.

United romping away with the game are given a corner by the referee, David Beckham steps up to take the kick Beckham pings ball to the edge of the area, and Scholesy explodes into a full volley as the ball drops. His shot dips and swerves as it tears through the air towards the bottom left-hand corner of Matt Clarke’s net. United win the game 4-0! What a goal this was this kind of corner was never seen before now teamS try it week in week out and still they can’t manage the skill and control of Scholes’s shot.

4. United v FC Porto 15th April 2009 Estádio do Dragão

After a poor first leg on uniteds part the team went over to Portugal needing a win after the teams drew 2-2 back at Old Trafford there was a couple of the Porto players reportedly saying in the papers that United were average as was Ronaldo! Well they were soon to see how average he was.

The game kicks off both teams feeling there way into the game and 6mins on the clock a sensational goal from Ronaldo who, out of nothing, rifles a right-footed 40-yard screamer into the top left-hand side-netting. The ball travelling in excess of 60mph what a rocket this was!! Silencing the portugese crowd and  soon  put the record straight on what a special player Ronaldo was!!!!

5. United v Arsenal 14th April 1999 FA Cup semi final replay Villa Park

With league still to be decided and the semis of the champions league around the corner united went into this replay knowing that if they won this game they would have one hand on one of the three trophies they were aiming for!! with the first game ending in a 0-0 draw the team went into this game knowing how big a game it was.

Beckham put united ahead for Dennis Bergkamp to level the game went into extra time and united also down to ten men after the dismissal of Roy Keane. Phil Neville gave away a penalty which Schmeichel saved from Bergkamp. then deep into extra time Giggs picked up possession on the halfway line after a loose pass from Patrick Vieira.

Giggs ran away from the halfway line, dribbling past four or five of Arsenal’s back line, before scoring a left-footed strike into the roof of David Seaman‘s net. Giggs ran celebrating towards the United fans taking his top off and swinging it round his head as he knew what a fantastic goal he had just scored probably the best goal in FA Cup history!

Nice collection. Don’t think Rooney’s gets in.

    Some that could’ve been in:

    – Ronaldo vs Arsenal, either 2 of the goals he scored away against them in the Champions League Semi Final 2008.

    – Rooney vs Newcastle (Volley)

    – Beckham vs Wimbledone (Half-way line)

And seeing it’s ‘Of All Time’ maybe one of the many mazey George Best runs.

  2. Mancunian Red says:

If you think they are the best ever you must be a new fan. you should have said your best goals in the last dozen years.

  3. anto says:

david beckhams from the half way line?
eric cantonas when he chipped the keeper and puffed out his chest?

  4. roasty_mufc says:

    cantona’s exquisite chip against sunderland.
    celebration to match it too!!

  5. bruce thomas says:

    Cantona’s chip v Sunderland

    Rooney’s volley v Newcastle

Beckham from the half way live v Wimbledon

    …you know the rest 🙂

  6. Paka says:

Paul Scholes vs Aston Villa…you simply can’t find anything better than that 🙂

  7. Steve Crabtree says:

Don’t agree with Keane and Cantona’s for considerations in the top 5. Others to consider are:

    Ronaldo’s freekick against Porto

Mark Hughes v Sheff Wed in about 1994

Denis Irwin v Wimbledon about 1994

Robson v Liverpool cup semi 85

Whiteside v Everton Cup Final 85.
