New deal at United for 'midfield marmite'

Sky Sports News have announced that Michael Carrick has signed a new three year deal at the club, which lasts until 2014.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I am delighted Michael has signed a new contract. He has been outstanding since joining us from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, he is a true professional and it’s great he has committed his future to the club.”

This ends months of speculation -going back to the end of last season, that the midfielder would be leaving old Trafford in the Summer.

Carrick who’s made over 200 appearances for The Reds has won three titles, the Champion’s League and two League Cups in his time at Old Trafford.

Although he is something of a divisive figure among many United fans- some claiming he’s the unsung hero of the side, others that he’s a mere passenger, there’s no denying the success he’s had in his United career.

The only slight worry is that Carrick’s committal to United for another three years, would discourage Fergie from pursuing another midfielder, although this is highly unlikely.

Carrick’s deal at United would arguably be his last as he’ll be 33 when it expires. The former Spurs player said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at this great club. There is fantastic team spirit within the squad and I’m pleased to have committed my future to United. We are in a very good position at the moment and I am confident this team will be successful for many years to come.”

Are you glad to see Carrick commit to another three years at Old Trafford? Please feel free to comment.
