Three Reasons United Don’t Need A Summer Spending Spree

With Michael Carrick recently signing a new long-term contract, it’s obvious that despite what many fans wish, he won’t be going anywhere soon. Neither it seems will Darren Fletcher who’s also poised to sign a new deal according to many reports.

While Fletcher has struggled at times this season, he’s still a class act on his day and hopefully once he gets himself fit, he’ll be able to put in the barnstorming performances he was fast becoming well known for.

Carrick’s one of the less revered players at the club, but while he may not be everyone’s cup of tea he has won a hat-trick of titles and a Champion’s League, so he can’t be the disaster some claim he is.

Darron Gibson’s a player that makes Carrick seem revered such is the level of disdain most Reds hold him in. I know most disagree but I’m still convinced Gibson may have a future at Old Trafford, particularly if his passing continues to improve.

Then there’s Rooney. I know I earlier labelled him a striker but as his recent performances have shown he can play practically as a midfielder and I for one think that’s where is future may lie.

The point I’m making is do United really need to go out and spend £40, £50 or even £100 million on a host of players.

Given the choice of Henderson or Carrick I’d actually prefer the latter, ditto if you gave me the choice between Rodwell and Pogba. You can argue with some justification that Rodwell’s more proven but I’m not sure his ascendancy is as great as every one assumes. Last season, for me, was a more impressive one for the midfielder than this one has been and I genuinely think Pogba’s punching well below his weight playing for United’s academy or the reserves for that matter.

Some people claim that United need to spend big to show City, Chelsea and the rest of the pretenders that we’ve still got the financial clout to compete and are not totally crippled by the Glazer’s debt.

Well I’m sorry but that’s as ridiculous as it is dangerous. Spending money just to show you’ve got it is like going for a quick pint in Alderley Edge when you live in Stretford. Whether United have money or not is beside the point, I genuinely don’t think we need to buy more than maybe one midfielder and a goalkeeper.

Even if we just bought a ‘keeper I wouldn’t be that disappointed, I remember in 1995 when Mark Hughes, Andrei Kanchelskis and Paul Ince left for “greener pastures” after United had just experienced our first trophy-less season in six years.

Everyone predicted we’d fall behind mega-spending Blackburn and Newcastle but a few youngsters came through the ranks to poor dandelion and burdock on that particular chip barm.

Giving Cleverley, Pogba, Morrison and some would argue even Carrick, Gibson and Fletcher the job of looking after United’s midfield may be something of a gamble, but for me it’s less of gamble than spending £80 million on players who may or may not be good enough for Old Trafford.

What planet r you on. United need at least two players in the middle of the park. A creative midfield player and a defensive one. We bought hargraves as the latter and the need now is just as great as then. Scholes is 36. We cannot continue to rely on him indefinitely. Barcelona will not be relying on Xavi as their linchpin when he is 36. Fergie is the greatest but his “no value” comments wear thin. It has been obvious for years that our midfield suffers when you apply pressure to it. Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez et all compensated. If we had bought two decent midfield players this summer our performances would have been 20 per cent better.

i would like to see those kids given a chance, cleverly will more than likely get a go next season but pogba/ravel are likely to go on loan or stay in the reserves.

personally i agree a keeper is our most likely signing and theres plenty of choice my preference is neuer it would be buffon but he has had his injury issues.

i agree that our defence is strong but i would freshen it up, as it seems age and injuries have caught up with brown, rio doesnt play as regularly as he should either. so i would move brown on and pick mexes on a free.

as for the attack i agree unless someone leaves it would be silly to buy another. however an attacking winger would be handy to take some of the pressure off of nani and valencia.

i would also like a defensive minded midfielder and an attacking one too.

but after the last few windows i am not expecting anything more than a new keeper and either then it might not be a big name.

you actually have made me believe you though i believe that it would be good to buy atleast 1 player and promoting all the player you have mentioned after all watz the use of havinga youth acadmey and not promoting youngsters.

i now were your coming from morrison and pogba and cleverly should be in the first team and they have got the talent to do it but i still think if fergie is going to spend we still need 1 very good attack mid like pastore and maybe a central midfielder like defour. i do think the three youngsters are good enough but i think if fergie doesnt buy no one and he picks these three they might have to much pressure on them.

1thing more with all due respect players like bebe and obertan needed to be removed from squad…. they occupy space and are of no use, I also support ur thought of promoting player because it is quite evident that teams formed by promoting players are stronger like 1999 treble winning team had many players promoted and present barca team give such example.

Rodwell would be a great signing; he’s young and can play in defence or midfield. A goalkeeper is by far the main priority. A creative midfielder should be the other signing. My 3 picks would be Rodwell, Goetze and De Gea. Welbeck, Macheda to come back from loan Morrison and Cleverley to be promoted to the first team. Bebe and Pogba to go out on loan. The Owens and Diouf should be allowed to leave. Just one fan’s opinion.

Are you doing PR for the Glazers??

    1) We need a GK (you forgot Adler in your list) 2) We need a DMF (Hargreaves wont come back — and neither so it seems will Carrick. 3) We need a creative world class playmaker. 4) We need a LW and 5) We probably need a CB as Ferinand is permanently crocked and Evans is unconvincing.

At least £100 million spend needed.

You forgot to mention Tunnicliffe…he’s been getting some rave reviews too….but would love to see Ravel, Pogba and Cleverley given a chance next season…
