Schmeichel lifts cup

Why can't this be my overriding thought of Peter the Great?

I love Peter Schmeichel I truly do, ever since I bumped into him –literally – as an eleven year old at Manchester Airport, I’ve been in awe of the giant Dane.

I remember watching him for the first time at a Sir Matt Busby testimonial game, in ’91, he kicked the ball from his hands and it flew right over the head of little Danny Wallace and out for a goal kick.

For eight years Schmeichel was without doubt the best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen and undoubtedly responsible for any trophy United won during his reign as number one.
The list of memories is nearly endless, throwing the Galatasasaray fan off the pitch at Old Trafford, THAT performance at St James’s Park and of course captaining United to victory in the Nou Camp. The guys a legend who deserves his place in the pantheon of United greats.

So why is it that at this ,moment in time if I saw ‘Peter the Great’ hitch-hiking I’d be tempted to drive through the nearest puddle to him?

In a recent interview the former United man had this to say on Wayne Rooney:

“I think he should get away,”

“It would be healthy for him to come out and play for another club – Real Madrid for example. Mourinho can get the best out of the big players,”

“It is painful to talk about the best player you have like that – because he is, when he’s in shape. Trying something new.

“United probably would not sell him to an English club, but a change of scenery could help.”

Is he for real- if you’ll pardon the pun? It’s almost as though Schmeichel’s suggesting Sir Alex isn’t the right coach for Rooney. I’m sorry but not since he signed for City have I been left feeling more disappointed and angry at Schmeichel and his actions.

Rooney doesn’t need to go anywhere to get the best out of him. He’s at the biggest club in the world with the greatest manager in the history of the game. Something Schmeichel seems to have forgot in his misguided ramblings.
