Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game at Old Trafford against FC Schalke in the semi final of the Champions League, the United boss said:“If I was giving advice to Edwin van der Sar, right now, I would say retire,

Van Der Sar

Stick or twist? Either way he's a legend.

Sir AlexFerguson has urged United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar to make this season his last and finish his career at the very top.

“He is at the absolute pinnacle of his career but sometimes, when a player gets to that age, age comes onto you very suddenly.
‘I wouldn’t want to see Edwin van der Sar in that situation. He deserves to go out at the very top and hopefully he does that.’

“His career has been absolutely fantastic.

“‘It is not just what he does on the football field. It is how he has handles himself as a professional and a human being.

“He is absolutely outstanding. In our dressing room at half-time and before games, he is absolutely fantastic.

“My advice to him is that this is the time. There is no reason for him to risk another year and maybe drop below his standard.”

No doubt the United boss will be hoping that VDS has the sort of final season that other great United keeper of the Ferguson era, Peter Schmeichel enjoyed.

In the great Dane’s last season United lifted the treble and while that’s not possible now, the Reds are only five games from a second double in three years.

Personally I agree with Sir Alex’s sentiments surrounding Van Der Sar, although he’s obviously one of the best goalkeepers- if not the best- on the planet, it would be a shame to see him fade and cost United games, when he can go out in the  blaze of glory his legendary career deserves.

The  again, I thought that about Ryan Giggs a few seasons ago…..
