Nani could be going to Serie A

Another day, another United player "leaving Old Trafford"

According to reports England’s latest hero Ashley Young will complete his move to Old Trafford in the next few days.

While that’s about as exclusive a story as the one about Wayne Rooney buying himself a new barnet, there’s now been a new twist added to the Young arrival tale.

The Mirror- admittedly hardly a shining example of journalistic excellence – but occasionally right- claim that Young’s arrival at Old Trafford will signal the departure of Nani.

The Mirror notes: “Nani’s future at Manchester United will come under scrutiny once the Premier League champions have completed the capture of Ashley Young.

“The Portuguese winger is unhappy that United have refused to offer him an improvement on the £70,000-a-week contract extension that he signed last March.

“And with United set to complete the £15million signing of Young from Aston Villa now that the winger has returned from international duty with England, Sir Alex Ferguson could cash in on the 24-year-old if Real Madrid firm up interest in him by lodging a bid.

“Nani was bitterly disappointed that Ferguson left him out of his team to face Barcelona in the Champions League last week at the end of a season which saw him named United’s Player of the Year.”

I’m not too keen on the Young deal if I’m totally honest, simply because I don’t think we actually need him. Young’s a right footed player who plays on the left, but I feel United would be better served with a naturally left footed winger- an Antonio Valencia for the left hand side if you will.

The idea that Young coming to Old Trafford will mean the departure of Nani makes me even less enamoured of the deal. Young’s a top quality player don’t get me wrong, but I think Nani is genuinely better and a level above that of Young.

This may all be paper talk but I’d hate to see one of my favourite players who’s just enjoyed his best season at Old Trafford leave for a player who may or may not be United class.

I know Nani had a poor end to the season but I fully expect him to pick up the next one in similar fashion as he started 2010/11.

As for Young, if although it’s more likely, when he arrives, he will bring a proven Premiership pedigree, I’m just unsure whehter he’s quite good enough to raise us to the next level. Only time will tell…

I would hate 2 see Nani go since he is one of my favourite players and this was his best season. Young is a good player but I really do not think that he can take his game 2 the next level(united level) Nani is best on the right or we can even try moving him centrally and he provides something different than Valencia

I think Young will be a quality addition to the midfield, for one thing he can lock down a position neither Nani nor Valencia can to the same degree, the left of midfield.

He will also offer something that Nani STILL hasn’t mastered, clearing the 1st man from corners.

He has all the attributes to succeed at OT.

Besides, Nani could yet be used as a makeweight in a deal for Sneijder if some reports are to be believed. I’d take Young & Sneijder for Nani any day of the week, and i really like Nani!

Another one from the ponderous Three Lions? Come on. Sure, Young distinguished himself from the rest of that miserable 11 yesterday against the normally even more miserable Swiss, but do we really need another English international? The last two years of Champions League, the World Cup, Euro 2008, and the 2012 qualifiers all prove that too many English footballers on one pitch is bad for the win/loss record.

If European success is what SAF is after, Young is hardly the answer. If we were looking to win the FA cup or the league only, maybe he’d be a fine move, but to replace Nani with him?

Against Barca, SAF went for what he perceives as work-rate and directness, and those perceived qualities went over like the proverbial lead zeppelin last Saturday.

Maybe I need better glasses, but even last season I wasn’t all that impressed with Valencia who has more or less one move which either works or doesn’t. After injury this year, it rarely did. Nani was looking shaky by the time Valencia came back, but who’s to say he wouldn’t have recovered if played more regularly? Yeah, Nani’s corners leave much to be desired but getting rid of him instead of cultivating him seems silly.

Next year against Barca, a midfield of Young, Carrick, Fletcher, Valencia, and Park or Giggs is really gonna win the day? Please.

  5. Jay says:

You’re assuming Young would be the only midfield addition? Please.

A midfield of Young, Sneijder/Modric, Diarra, Valencia would be far more potent than what we have now. Plus with Rooney sat just in front of that 4 it’s alot stronger than anything we’ve had for a while.

Nani and Valencia both play right side and neither play as good as Young can on the left.

Well, Young probably will replace Giggs once he retires, not Nani.
