Darron Gibson

Would United really be better off without the Irishman?

For many months now I’ve been trying with little or no success to defend Darron Gibson on these pages.

The much maligned midfielder has been a favourite of mine, simply because of the fact I think he’s a decent player who’s been harshly treated by a lot of Reds. The whole twitter debacle, where he was given the sort of abuse normally reserved for the likes of Carlos Tevez and Steven Gerrard actually made me feel somewhat ashamed to call myself a United fan.

I know he’s not the best player we’ve got at Old Trafford but telling him to: ‘F*ck off and die’ is a little out of order.

The latest reports suggest he could be on his way to Aston Villa. The Mail notes:

Aston Villa are making a £3.5million move for Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson.

The Republic of Ireland international saw a move to Sunderland fall through last month despite initial discussions.

The 23-year-old is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the emergence of players such as Tom Cleverley and is keen to get his career back on track.

A move to Villa could be great for both the player and United as it would give him a chance to play for a decent Premier League side and prove his worth, while the Reds would receive some. Money for a player who cost nothing.

Although he won’t be missed by a lot of United fans , I’ll actually be sad to see him leave, simply because I always felt he had the potential to to turn the criticism around.

I agree he should be shown respect for his service to the club and if he leaves I wish him all the best

Hard though it may seem he was never quite good enough ,nearly but just inconsistant . I wish him well , he will prove a good buy for Villa. He had nothing to offer to take us forward at this point .

Hes nowehere near as bad as some make out and i can see him making a real good go of it at Villa. However £3.5 million for a 23 year old full international is like some sort of joke. we always have to pay over the odds but it gets right on my t*t end how we always always sell for peanuts!!!!!!

ever since i saw him i knew he had no future at OT, but i gotta say that he’s a decent player and doesnt deserve the stick he got…he will make a decent career elsewhere but he isnt a top 4 material…he’s no worse than carrick

I agree, I think he had more impact than Carrick has in a few seasons, he is on the way up and Carrick is dropping off in my mind. Fletcher was a slow burn and for many seasons Manu “FANS” never thought he’d make the grade, now seen as one of the the first names on team sheet for big games (When fit). I do believe Gibson will benefit from regular games and doubt he’d get them at United, that’s why I wish him all the best wherever he goes, and as an Ireland supporter I think it will help the national team also.

Not worthy of the abuse….but simply not a United player…sometimes u gotta be cruel to be kind and this thats what SAF has done in this instance.

  6. Mike Flan says:

    Yeah,

Them idiots who would say such things about a player are not real fans anyway and these “supporters” are in abundance at Man Utd.
Do these idiots realise that Alex ferguson has selected that player and to be honest I think he knows more than these dumbass armchair “fans”.
Gibson always puts in a shift for utd, so when he is playing he should be encouraged thats what a “supporter” is supposed to do.

I don’t know if Manchester United is the best team in the world, but really the worst supporters for their own players.

      • Danny Salford Red says:

Dont talk utter garbage you prat. A small minority of every teams fans are poorly behaved towards to their own players. Stop trying to tar an entire fan base with the same accusation you nob. Who do you support anyway?

        • Svet says:

I’m supporting Manch.United for decades, but more closely last 3 years, and participate in many forums.
I met a lot intelligent, reasonable, constructive debates from some(most of them quit the forums), but many others, constantly humiliating some players in, and out of the pitch.
But honestly I wish Manch.United luck.
          P.S.
Could you translate to me “prat’ and “nob”.

  7. My Own Cow says:

Really hope, if he does go to Villa, that he does really well and makes all the idiots who verbally assaulted him eat their words.

I’ve supported Darron Gibson the last couple of seasons, and couldn’t believe the way he was treated by some United fans. I guess when Fletcher (and O’Shea to some extent) stepped up their game, United fans need some kind of scapegoat.
Gibson is a quality footballer, and some parts of his game (primarily his shooting) is close to world class. And I mean this wholeheartedly, as being one of the best strikers of the ball of all the players in a team like United, elevates you into that bracket. Gibbo had the skillset to turn games on his own, due to that right foot of his.
I still think he has quality enough to be worth holding on to, but I’d wish him the best of luck if he were to leave for Villa. At Villa, he’ll get a more minutes, and probably score several screamers for them in the process. But hey, as United fans, we’re used to our second best players becoming the star performers at their new clubs.
Good luck Gibbo, if you stay or go.

agree with plenty of above mentioned – good player, def. top 10 EPL level … on the other hand not just United´s. BUt still – United player & some respect to him is a must from true United fans. Never my favourite, but would wish him well Agree with the note considering the fee – it is a City (= JOKE! JOKE! JOKE!), I would expect fee somewehere in the region of 6-7 mio gbp at the very least. He deserves 1st team football, but we should not go under 5 mio, simply not … mho only though
