It’s a simple question and one had I asked at the very beginning of the season, would have seemed like a no-brainer in favour of the Mexican.
Last season Chicharito was arguably the biggest positive in United’s entire campaign bursting onto the scene with a series of memorable and important goals that quickly established him as one of the world’s most lethal young strikers.
While Chicharito was bagging goals with aplomb for United, Danny Welbeck was busy impressing, albeit to a lesser degree at Sunderland. The Mancunian may not have set the scoring charts alight but he did bag some important strikes and proved he could hack it in the Premier League, a lesson United took heed of.
This season, Welbeck has stepped it up a gear, scoring freely and linking up with the likes of Cleverley, Anderson, Nani and Rooney to give United the sort of football that’s often been missing these past couple of seasons. Meanwhile Chicharito, recovering from a head injury picked up in pre-season, hasn’t been able to enjoy a real run in the side yet, although he’s still managed to bag a brace of goals at the Reebok.
Welbeck’s actually played one less league game than Chicharito- mainly due to a hamstring picked up against Arsenal, but has shone since his return bagging two goals against Basel and a late nerve calmer in the last league game versus Norwich.
The question then is who should start against Liverpool at Anfield a week on Saturday? Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who took the Premier League by storm last season or Danny Welbeck, who’s done something not too dissimilar this season?
Personally, I think you should start the form player in a game that should United win, would give us the boost to make our start to the season almost unreal. Welbeck couldn’t have done much better this season and while Chicharito is definitely a big game player, I feel he’d be more useful coming off the bench should he be needed than Welbeck would.
It’s a great problem for Sir Alex to have to wrestle and either way there’s no real wrong answer, why not comment below or vote on our poll to the right of this post to tell us which young striker you’d start against the dippers?

id go with welbeck….chicharito has been a bit off since his injury in pre season….plus hes more of a runner than hernandez….id have him start and then , sub hernandez at 60 mins to have a run at carra and skrtl when they start to tire…he’ll be even more dangerous and will have less offside calls..!!!
I do not blame Hernandez for his off-side calls, he plays on the shoulder and does it better than anyone, close calls can go either way. Its when Nani decides to do a step-over instead of playing the ball that others get caught offside. Hernandez is proven in world cup, prem, and gold cup during the summer, he ooozes goals, but I wouldn’t complain with either starting. But the internationals may decide who starts,
you know how strikers like ronaldo and owen were so successful at playing on the shoulder of the last defender and converting….cuz they knew exactly when to make the run…they had immaculate timing…this is when both of them were infact younger than hernandez….even they had players like nani doing all sorts of nonsense stuff on the pitch…but they timed their run to such perfection that they limited their offside calls which meant more goals….as of this moment now welbeck is doing much better then hernandez in that sense….thats why id prefer him to start instead of hernandez!!!!!
“in that sense” of not getting caught off side??? Welbeck rarely plays off the shoulder so would be really unlucky to get caught off side. Its Hernandez’z runs be he offside or not that creates the space for Rooney and others to play in, pulling defenders out of position and creating chances. Welbeck will have to do much more for me to see him preferred starter over Hernandez, although he is a massive talent. But unlike you i will not try and pick holes in his ability to give reason for my choice of hernandez, two quality forwards I chose Hernandez.
im not denying chicha’s talent…im just pointing to the fact that right now welbeck is a better option to have for hernandez upfront cuz hes scoring goals and hernandez is not….simple otherwise who wouldnt want a finisher of his qualities in the 6 yrd box…..hes the most natural finisher iv seen since ronaldo lima….
welbeck is a much better player than chicharito, and if valencia starts on the right back its gonna b a disaster 4 us.
How would it be a disaster, Valencia is the perfect winger for both rooney and Lil Pea, his early delivery gives defenders no time to get back causing panic and offering Rooney and Hernandez the exact ball they want. Rooney said it, the year he scored over 30 goals he thanked Valencia for setting them up for him. Do u watch football much?
kim said valencia cannot be the right BACK,not the right winger
Soz. little hasty on that. Yea, i’d prefer if Valencia didn’t have to play fullback. but apart from the natural defenders he’s most likely to play there if we’re short.
starting welbeck for sure…and in the second half sending in chicharito. both strikers bring different dimension of attack, sure Sir Alex know what best for man utd.
Chicharito to start. He is a better stricker. He has proven his worth last seaon and scored game winning goals when no one else could. He is still finding his best form. Welback is good but javier has him beat.
Welbeck would be better suited to face Livepool, this will be a physical game more to Welbecks style with Chica to come off the bench with his speed if needed to cause havoc.
Almost all who have posted agree on Welbeck starting because he can atleast play football. Chicha is good but only at scoring, he is better of coming on from the bench.
Jus like when he scored after 34seconds against chelsea in the title decider last season. Think ya’l find opinion split 50/50. I laugh at how a couple good performances by Welbeck (and there have only been a couple)and hernandez suddenly CAN’T play football. He’s good but only at scoring!!!!! do u want him to do tip-ups for 15 mins or score goals. Most of the comments on this post are ridiculous
Good point but you forget that Goals win the game not dancing around the ball.
we could start like this: 1.david degae 2.smalling,3.evra,4.evans,5.vidic(c) 6.anderson,7.nani,8.cleverly,11.young. 9.welbeck,.10.wayne rooney. system 4-4-2
Welbeck definitely he has a better touch on the ball than Hernandez and links up better with the rest of the team.
thats funny welbecks touch is one area where i thought he was week.
Hernandez, without question.
great to see hernandez in the 1st eleven, and see how he can damage the livrpool defend, links with ando, cleverly and rooney, bursts at the right time and right place, heading into the net the nani and young cross..that the disasterous dimensions that the little pea owns
