Something to do on a Thursday night now, I suppose.

After yesterday’s disappointing defeat to FC Basel, Manchester United find themselves eliminated from the Champions league and dropped down to Europa League football on ‘Thursdays on Channel 5.’ So what can Manchester United expect from the tournament and who can we be drawn with in the next round of the tournament?

Manchester United will join the Europa League in the round of 32. This means that if we manage to get to the final, we will have played 9 games in the tournament. Similar to the Champions League, in the knockout rounds there will be home and away leg ties in which the away goals rule applies.  The winner goes through to the next round.

As for the teams we can draw in the next round, since Man Utd are a top seed, we shall avoid Man City, Valencia and Olympiakos who are also top seeded as well as the winners of each Europa League group. Currently the only teams that have been confirmed in the draw to face Man Utd are Hannover, Legia Warsaw and the four lower seeded teams who were eliminated from the Champions League (Porto, Trabzonspor, Ajax and Viktoria Plzen). The other teams we can draw in the tournament are yet to be confirmed since the group stages of the Europa League have not yet finished, however they will be the runners up in each group. 10 more teams will be confirmed in the draw next Thursday night.

The draw for the Europa League round of 32 and 16 will take place on 16/12/11 at 12:00GMT, straight after the draw for the Champions League round of 16. As a top seed, Manchester United will play their first game in the tournament away from home.

So there you have it. What are your thoughts on the Europa League? How do you feel about Man Utd’s elimination from the Champions League? Feel free to comment below.

Well done for tackling such a painful subject. You’re a bigger man than I am.

If we could forfeit these games and pay a fine,I would have suggested that but unfortunately,we’ll have to play the Europa League. We might as well give it all we have and take the positives from this embarassing situation.
As for the teams we’ll be playing,we’ll just to wait and see. There are so many in the competition.
PS:If it’s possible, can you please Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra to keep quiet? It’s their poor defending that brought Basel back at Old Trafford and set us up for this stinker.
