De Gea – Confident with his passing but also looked comfortable when collecting the aerial ball. Made a world class save to stop De Jong. 8

Jones – Worked hard for the full 90 minutes. Always looked to take on players and put in a good cross for the strikers to attack. Defended well. 7

Evans – Made one sloppy pass at the start but was faultless for the rest of the game. Clever when intercepting and tackling. 7

Ferdinand – Defended too deep which gave the Ajax attackers time and space to trouble De Gea. Better in the second half. 6

Fabio – Mixed performance. Sloppy with his defensive work but constantly troubled the Ajax fullbacks with his overlapping runs. 6

Nani – Simply awful. Did well in getting himself in the right position to receive the ball but failed to do anything meaningful with those chances. 5

Carrick – Wasn’t able to impose himself as much as he would have liked due to his more defensive role today. 6

Cleverley – Assured touch on the ball and showed glimpses of his early season form. Will only improve with more game time. 6

Young – Looked intimidated by the occasion but grew in confidence as the match progressed. Took his goal well after the chance looked like it was gone. 6

Rooney – Dropped deep to help out the midfield. Tracked back and did well to play the ball out wide. Set up the second. 7

Hernandez – Should have done better when holding up the ball and linking up play but instead he lost the ball far too easily. Took his chance really well to score the second. 6

Substitutions:

Scholes: Always looked to play the simple ball and continuously showed for the ball to help the defence. Simple bit effective. 7

Valencia – Won the ball back and passed to Rooney in the build up for the second goal. Picked up a hamstring injury in the process. 6

Welbeck – Replaced Valencia very late on. Didn’t have the time or see enough of the ball to make an impact. 5
