Could everyone's favourite winger suddenly find some support

I’ll be honest, I’ve always found pre-season friendlies completely pointless in assessing whether a player is good enough for United. Look at the past several seasons and you’ll realise just how ridiculous it may seem to think a good pre-season performance qualifies a player to make an impression at United.

Zoran Tosic, Chris Eagles even Dong Fangzhou have all enjoyed decent spells in a Red shirt pre-season so forgive me if I’m a tad sceptical as to whether scoring against Kaizer Chiefs means you can do the same against Arsenal or Barcelona.

United’s victory over Shangai Shenhua was about as routine as it gets with the Reds treating it like a training session for much of the game. For the fans it was the chance to see new signings Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell as well as some of the youngsters Sir Alex had promised to give game time to during the tour.

With a man of the match performance plus the winning goal, you’d expect it to be the Japanese star who was receiving all the plaudits but for many it was the name of a certain Portuguese winger being praised the most.

Bebe followed up his equalising goal against Amazulu F.C with another important performance today, coming on in the second half and completely terrorising the Shenghua defence. It was Bebe’s hard work which set up the winner causing Sir Alex to comment after the game:

“It was good work by Bebe too, who set it up for him. I think Bebe did really well when he came on.”

It wasn’t just the goal, the Portuguese winger had a speculative 40 yard effort saved by the Shenghua ‘keeper ran at defenders and was a constant source of not just attacking prowess but also entertainment.

“IT’S SHANGAI SHENHUA!!” I can hear you scream, somewhat justifiably, at me, let’s not get carried away and suddenly claim the former homeless star has suddenly turned the corner.

Not even Mr and Mrs Dias Correia would claim Bebe is going to be pushing Nani, Young or Tony V out of the side, but could he salvage a career that even only a few days ago looked deader than Team GB’s football prospects.

It’s a question I’m left asking after reading so many positive tweets posts and status updates surrounding Bebe, some taking the p***, others genuine, so what do you think, “is there still hope for Bebe at United?”

Could the man who’s something of a laughing stock to many fans actually still have something to offer the Reds?

Answers on a brick through the usual window please….

i genuinely feel that if bebe keeps putting in such performances…..hes gonna be an even bigger asset to the club than players like nani and rooney….but for that he really needs to pull his socks up and work crazy hard….but its good to see a player constantly picked on by fans finally showing sumthing on the field…

Only a friendly so cant get carried away but give him a proper chance cos weve got nothin 2 loose with him-see what he really can do and if he isnt up to it in proper games then get red next year

BEBE WILL BECOME A GREAT PLAYER IF HE IS GIVEN ADEQUATE TIME TO PLAY.I CAN EVEN PREDICT THAT HE IS A BETTER PLAYER THAN ASHLEY YOUNG….

He certainly has got the potential. Also keep in my mind how he had to transition from a street fooballer to playing in front of odd 70 thousand or so spectators. Naysayers will always will try to mock but i hope so desperately for him to succeed and the make the skeptics kiss their own ass

Look lets face it, if he didn’t have the (unconfirmed) price tag of £7.5m around his neck then people wouldn’t be so quick to write him off. He’s a young player with very little experience in terms of a proper football education so he’s bound to be behind in his footballing development. Imagine the culture shock from playing at the standard of football he was used to and then suddenly playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Give him time and you never know maybe he could turn in to something a bit special.

Only a pre season friendly against poor opposition but Bebe was excellent. Tunnicliffe is also developing well and could possibly rival Cleverley for a midfield place. Love Jesse Lingard.

Kagawa was really good . Bebe did reasonably well but I would prefer if both bebe and macheda are loaned to premier league clubs . A special note to Anderson for his performance , passed the ball extremely well esp long balls .
United should sign one young left back , 1 mid preferably sahin or tiote or cabaye ,loan out bebe macheda and sell berbatov

I think bebe will become d best player in world…d guy is gud,i love seeing him playin and i wish fergie will give him chance 2 prove his self.up man united..

When you think back to when we bought Bebe, Real Madrid were also interested. That makes me think that he must have something. United wouldnt have just thrown 7 million at a complete unknown without seeing something good in him.

well 2 me, he’s always bn an outstndn playr! Watch d power he used 2day 2 push d defence open! Those r kinda d power a stricker or wingr mst have in d premier leauge nwadays! Bt he need lots of finishing 2 b done 2 him, he is still kinda crude, need 2 b refined! If he is given d game experience? I bet he can kick up 2 b a big star! We’ll knw hw SAF can be impatient with youngstars dat dont live up 2 expectations! Bt he has faith in him, and i thnk its payn off! God b wit u Bébé!
