Lucas's Robbie Fowler impression was winner in the dressing room

Depending on who you believe Lucas or ‘Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva’ as he’s known to his mates, may have become the latest big money target for  United since last Summer’s practically non-existent pursuit of Wesley Sneijder -did we even bid for him?

The problem when United get linked with someone, is there are so many ‘experts’ who come out of the woodwork on various social networking sites and United forums to tell you how amazing said player is and how we desperately need him. Don’t get wrong there are those fans that have studied Brazilian football or whatever and do genuinely know their stuff but the problem for many of us, myself included, is that most of our knowledge comes from hearsay to Youtube.

In the case of Lucas Youtube and the opinion of pundits  are all most Reds have to go on when it comes to  just how good the Brazilian is. Of course that will all change in  a few weeks time when we get the chance to see him in the Olympics with many of us actually being given the opportunity to watch him play at Old Trafford.

What do we really know about Lucas though? Well first of all there’s all the stats which don’t tell us an awful lot if we’re brutally honest. Lucas will be twenty in August and has already carved out a name for himself as one of Brazil’s brightest talents, amassing a professional record of 104 appearances, 26 goals and 20 assists for Sao Paulo where he’s played since the age of 17.

Lucas can play in a variety of positions across the midfield but seems best suited as a winger and although he is stronger on his right foot, his left  could hardly be classed as ‘weak.’

The youngster’s main attribute seems to be his dribbling and I’m sure like myself you’ve already been dazzled by his skills on Youtube. The problem with Youtube is that it can make practically anyone look good, even Gabriel Obertan.

On the international front Lucas has scored goals at all levels for Brazil including a solitary strike for the full side, coming against none other than arch rivals Argentina.

For those who haven’t seen some of the Brazilians vast array of tricks check out this video :

The burning question is ‘do United really need him?’ Well if push comes to shove, arguably not ,with Nani, Young and Tony V all vying for only two spots but then again what side wouldn’t benefit from having a supremely talented Brazilian teenager amongst their number? Maybe the signing of Lucas could give United an extra much needed match winner, particularly in Europe.

The figures being bandied about range from anything between £25 to £35 million depending on who you believe, the only slight worry I have is that Lucas reminds me of a young Brazilian who dazzled us in the 1998 World Cup, who seemed capable of beating three defenders at once and was nicknamed ‘the Rembrandt of dribbling’ in a somewhat fitting Nike ad campaign. His name Denilson, he went on to cos Real Betis a still lofty even by today’s standards £21 million way back in 1998. Was Denilson a success in Spain? Betis were relegated in his second season but maybe I’m being ‘harsh’ with that comparison.

Lucas is talented of that their is no doubt, it remains to be seen if United put their money where their mouth was n’t with Sneijder last season.

Will United’s strikeforce be enough to carry them to the title next season? Bet at home are offering decent odd of 13/4 for the Reds to regain ‘our trophy.’

We nid a midfider, martinez wil nt cost us like dat even iker muniain. And if nt y nt gaitan.

  2. Abubakar says:

Things making united fans desperate of seeing new signing were: Other EPL giants engage in restrenthning thier clubs, Big clubs like Barca,RMDrid,ACM,Munich,… that were all aiming UEFA CL(as thus united) were aswell restrengthning thier already existing strong team for the title, Every fan of any club believe that winning a trophy is primary profit from club and ManU are waving bye to FAcup, CARLING, UEFACL & now EPL, & slow/start&abort signing process dipicts by the club.

  3. Albasheer says:

You were right, we don’t really need him and what we need is another central midfielder and left back. And I can bet Fergie is not going to sign again, I am sure of it. All these fuss and rumours and Fergie “saying we could sign one may be two” is to make sure tickets are renewed and as soon as it happens he will come out with weird excuses ” there is no value in the market” united never looked like signing Moura, everything about the saga was staged. How on earth would his club reject 32 million, for teenage boy, this is ridiculous. Its all lies. And about Moura I still agree we don’t need him but you cannot dispute the fact that he’s got talent, that I am sure of. Let’s stop deceiving ourselves, united are taking step liverpool did, we are slowly fading away, we can’t even buy players. Ashley young is simply waste of money, just too hyped and overrated, we never needed him. The money should have been used to buy a midfielder last season instead, but we we didn’t.

  4. redunited says:

after anderson lets nt trust brazilians again.£30M? buy ericksen and muniain.they proved they r worth.

  5. ChrisW says:

I still don’t believe we ever had any intention of buying Sneijder. The Moura story seems much more solid – we have actual quotes and stories of alleged bids by United. The Glazers seem happier spending big money on youngsters who command lower wages and are likely to have good sell-on value and Fergie is probably dreaming of signing another Ronaldo.

  6. fernley says:

albasheer no offense but you are one massive idiot.. united doing a liverpool? you have no idea what you re talking about.. considering we was winning the premierleague this season up until the last 5 minutes shows me that we are goig no where. As for moura i think its all lies, i think we was looking and thats about it.. what club would reject £38m for a young un proven player? i think we will sign one more person but no1 special.

    • chongo says:

Spot on Albasheer. What have we got? Really and truly. Evans, Young, Jones, Carrick, Wellbeck, Scholes etc. I dont bother about ‘opinions’ and arguments because the weaknesses I see in these players and yes, the manager these days scares the bejesus out of me.

  7. REDboyDK says:

I think were going for him and if we got him it would be fantastic. we need someone like ronaldo again, a midfielder right up there in the top 5 over best midfielders in the world and im sure lucas will eventually end right up there.. so all thats left is will he be playing for us or will he one day be the name we fear when meeting him in CL?? or PL if we should loose another big name to chelsea!

  8. esse says:

honestly, we need midfiefer like gaitan , martinex even porto star moutiho. Y on earth should sir alex waste lots of money on a player dat is yet to prove himself in europe. Someone should talk sense to sir

  9. g says:

GatOns a winger as well dipshit. Am I the only fucker who thinks we need another winger. 2 world class players required for every position

  10. Albasheer says:

Not as idiotic and moronic as you are @fernly. Keep believing lies, we will see what turns up or who the real idiot is. United won’t sign that player. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion though. Keep dreaming. Let’s united buy the likes of Welbeck, young, jones and the rest of overrated English players. And about the liverpool issue I stated earlier, loosing the title in 5 minutes, winning nothing, embarrassment in UEFA champions league and Europa league, isn’t that enough evidence we are shifting power. United aren’t as reliable as they used to be if it comes to transfer issues, just admit it
