"Fergie sign them up!"

"Fergie sign them up!"

All the talk about Robin Van Persie and Lucas Moura seems to have detracted from two major signing’s United need to sort out before the season starts. Danny Welbeck and Nani are still to put pen to paper on new deals and it doesn’t seem the best way to start a new campaign, with two of our biggest star’s futures uncertain.

Speaking about Welbeck’s contract talks Sir Alex Ferguson had only this to say on the matter last month:

“It’s difficult to say where we are with that at this moment in time.”

At the time the general feeling was that United and Welbeck would no doubt ‘sort it out’ but as the season approaches no headway seems to have been made.

Although these things are alway open to speculation the general feeling seems to be that Welbeck is asking for around the £75,000 a week mark, while the club value his services at nearer £50,000 per week.

Don’t get me wrong £50,000 a week for a 21 year-old is a princely sum, but when you consider Chicharito, who Welbeck kept out of the side for most of last season earns around £80,000 – then asking for just below parity with him hardly seems like Welbeck being greedy.

We’ve seen this sort of behaviour from United before with Wes Brown keeping John O’Shea out of the side yet being offered less seemingly due to his loyalty. Why a player should be paid far less than a similar team mate, just because he’s Mancunian and loyal to the club is beyond me. Welbeck is a fully fledged England international, who’s proven at the top level and would easily command £100,000 a week if he was plying his trade at almost any other major club in Europe.

The whole Lucas circus has done nothing but simply highlight the extortionate money United would have to pay for even an unproven player and the fact we aren’t willing to spend it. The question is why are we not fighting tooth and nail to keep the wingers we do need, mainly Nani.

Back in June Nani stated: “I have had five seasons at Manchester United and have won all the titles,” Nani said. “Now I am really happy but I don’t know about my future. Now I will study opportunities. Football is not only about England or Spain. It is possible to enjoy success in other countries. My agent is waiting on news about United. We have presented a counter-offer and now we are waiting on an offer from the club.”

Not signing Eden Hazard or Lucas Moura is one thing, but not keeping one of our few match winners is another entirely and would be disastrous for United.

Nani and Welbeck were an integral part of the side that so nearly  won United’s twentieth title last season, I dread to think we go the same way as Arsenal and allow our top player’s contracts to run down until it’s too late.

well, i sincerely hope we can compete next season. i think we should prioritize the contract extension of our key players. hopefully bring in some new players to compete for the title.

    Strange goings on at united.

  3. MS says:

2 of our biggest stars – WELBECK???? Give me a break. What has Welbeck done, to be classed as a big star? He is not a profilic goalscorer and never will be. Average at best. Now Nani they should have sorted his contract, but I think Nani is fed up with being messed around, and I think he will leave. Says something that Nani is the only red this summer that other teams have wanted to buy.

  4. Peco says:

Well said mr? It’s madness y were after moura and RVP is dense! We need montieno of porto and martinez and get the united boys to sign new contracts

  5. Pre Munich Red says:

Spot on. We have developed Nani over several years. Although he is still far too inconsistent you get the feeling that he could be just about ready to come really good. It would be disastrous for somebody else to benefit from that. Yet rumours persist that we will sign a winger. Unless we are planning to get rid of Nani is this a priority?
The Welbeck situation is a no brainier. Although £50,000 per week is obscene we have to pay the going rate. Just sign him on and get on with the football.

  6. Erad says:

Eden harzard snubbed utd bcos manutd r nt ambitious. Just lyk a wounded lion whose cub is snatched away n shoutd 4 a while and afta time, relax. The club is only runnd 4 profit n nt 4 trophy. Thanx to fergie n glazer. We lost d trophy nt bcos of gd bt bcos we dnt have world class players. Compare- kompany and aging ferdinand. Clichy n aging evra. Zabaleta n immature jones. Yaya n defenceless carrick. Creative silva n just pacy valencia. Manu is nt gud enuf anymore. Get Tiote, Baines, Sahin, Moura, RVP, Pastore. Bench Ferdinand n Jönes and start smalling n rafael. Throw away carrick. Tiote 2 replace him

Erad I’m afraid you’ve lost the plot.
      1) Hazard joined Chelsea because they were willing to pay the obscene agent’s fee.
      2) Last time I checked Fergie didn’t buy Man Utd and saddle the club with his personal debt. Don’t insult the best manager the club and the game has ever had.
      3) Your comparisons are biased and ridiculous. We were level on points with City and you try make it sound like our team is incompetent. You’re asking us to bench some our best defenders and our key central midfielder for the new season.
      4) We do not need anywhere near the number of new signings you’re suggesting. Some of those players mentioned are reasonable targets but not getting all at once.

I don’t know if you’re just looking to wind up people, but get a grip before commenting again. And try to learn English while you’re at it.

      • Gibraltarians says:

I agree the guy ought to learn to write English and he over cooks his argument but by the same token part of the problem here is people like you unwilling to see the obvious. Erand makes three points: firstly the club appears increasingly to be run for profit and not to win trophies. Well I have to say he has a point. I am hugely sceptical about the way the club is being run and I was someone who was willing to give the Glaziers a chance when they took over. Secondly he says that we lost the league last year because we failed to inves in world class players. I could not agree more. The last big signing we made was Berbatov a number of years ago and in the interim we have lost Ronaldo and Tevez, two truly world class players. Every year we pursue top players only to lose out because we cannot compete at the top end of the market. I also suspect top players look at the situation at United, it’s debt and lack of investment in the team and it makes them question the attractiveness of the project in footballing terms. Thirdly he says United are not good enough any more. Well actually I agree. You say we lost the league on goal difference but the reality is that that only papered over the cracks. Those cracks were particularly obvious in Europe and in below par performances in the league despite our points total. To suggest otherwise is to stick your head in the sand. For goodness sake, we had to bring Scoles (a 37 year) old of retirement half way through the season to help us out. That would not happen at Real Madrid or Barcelona. It would be unthinkable for Barcelona to call Xavi out of retirement at that age. It is, with all due respect to a fantastic professional like Scholes an embarrassing admission of weakness. We may not be incompetent but we are not close to being a top team. Fourthly he cites a number of players that might be useful. He mentions four midfielders who might improve the team. I happen to think we are a defensive and creative midfielder short. Any of the four names he refers to would probably improve us. Others have suggested we need a left back and it has been reported we were interested in Baines. Personally I think that position will give us problems in the next year or two, but midfield must be the priority. Out of all the names he mentions, the one I am not sure we need is RVP and SAF has already said he has made a bid for him. We have four very good forwards and I am not sure what he can add to team obviously lacking in midfield and not attack. All it will do is to entrench us in a 4 4 2 system that will not work against top opponents unless your middle two are top class and can stick their foot in. We have not had that kind of player since Keane and Ince played together. Buying RVP will play to our weakness unless we strengthen the middle with at least one player.

        • PS18 says:

You still that pessimistic mate? I think a lot of fans, yourself included, have a tendency to overreact to the good and bad news. Regardless of the argument about whether we need him, the events of the last few days completely negate your points about being run for profit and not attracting world class talent.
You should have a hell of a lot more faith in SAF, it’s amazing how quickly people forget just how ridiculously successful he’s been and start saying he’s past it etc. Fergie won’t be blind to any problems at LB, and if he reckons we’re fine without buying one (which I think would be a needless solution for a problem lasting one year) then I’m sure he has a plan.

Also, any team would love to accept Scholes back. It wasn’t a case where the team went calling him – he wanted to come back, we were happy to have him. Simple.
For our midfield ‘problems’, look at the depth we actually have there: Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs, Fletcher. All for two positions. Seeing as you say another striker wasn’t necessary because we have so many, how would you justify another CM? Not to mention the youngsters coming through and other players like Kagawa and Jones who can fill in there if needed.

Finally, I’m not the biggest fan of a rigid 4-4-2 in Europe but how can you be so sure it’s such a bad thing all the time? In the EPL it works well for a lot of games. Also, we won’t be stuck to it even with Rooney and RVP – they can both fit in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1.

    • Seanzo says:

why don’t you compare the players who should be fucking compared mate? Kompany<Vidic. Clichy? Take the twins ANY day over him. Silva and Valencia? Thats not even apples and oranges mate. Thats like a fucking prime rib and a god damn T-bone steak..wait wait, I dont like T-bones. I dunno some other sort of delicious shit. We missed out on Silva those years ago, but Silva isn't Valencia. Silva = Kagawa. And Zabaleta and Jones? fuck lol, I don't know what the hell that post was trying to prove, all it did was prove you have no fuckin clue dude.

  7. lamar says:

    we can’t let them go.

  8. pjch says:

If all sources areto be believed then another potential signing (Lucas) is about to go to PSG. Now Nani and Wellbeck are haveing contract problems. All doesn’t seem well at United and I hope its not the start of a decline on a great club I have supported for 50+ years. We have to go the extra mile now because the likes of City and Chelsea will spend money. We don’t seem willing to pay the going price for players anymore. Come on SAF, you tell us that the Glaers back you all the way with players you want. Now put the money where your mouth is. Get Welbeck and Nani to sign their contracts or have to spend millions on replacements and higher wages too

  9. Dominic says:

The most important signing for Unoited would be a replacement for Ferdinand. I don’t think Vidic can carry him for another season.

    • PS18 says:

Carry him for another season? Ferdinand stood up just fine last season when Vidic was injured.

In my humble opinion, he’s still got loads of experience. It’s not like a lack of pace is a problem, take Maldini and Nesta as examples.

  10. elhair says:

Sorry but if some one offered £20 million for Welbeck I’d snap there hand off. He isn’t good enough yet and we need a better striker than him if we are to get the title back. The Pea is our new Ole and is best from the bench. As for Nani for me he’s still not the finished artical after 5 years so will he ever? I would sell him for £25 mill if possible. But I hate it when we have a go at the club when contract time comes around. Welbeck is only worth £50 grand a week and if he improves Fergie will improve his contract as he has done in the past. Fergie needs to concentrate on the team at the moment and forget about the scum the run our club.
