United’s under 21s defeated Liverpool at Langtree Park tonight thanks to a late, late goal from Italian defender Michele Fornasier.

The Reds fielded a strong side with the likes of Nick Powell, Alexander Büttner, Jesse Lingard and Ben Amos all starting but Liverpool had their fair share of experienced youngsters featuring as well.

Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey and Andre Wisdom all started for the Merseysiders in a game that featured some of the best young players in the country.

United were handed an advantage when Liverpool defender Stephen Sama was sent off early in the second half, which gave Warren Joyce’s side the impetus.

Despite chances for United, it looked as though honours were going to end up even until Fornasier popped up late on to give the Reds their second win in the Elite Group.

United line-up: Amos; Veseli, Thorpe, Fornasier, Büttner; Lawrence (Ekangamene 50), Powell, Cole, Lingard; Januzaj (Blackett 76); Schlupp. Subs not used: Gollini, McGinty, James.
