De Gea – Pulled off some very good saves but was left hapless with the two goals. Good on the ball though and looked assured at all times. 7

Rafael – A very matured performance compared to his past game against Madrid. He also showed a great attacking side to his game as well as keeping Ronaldo quiet for most of the match. 8

Rio – Always assured at the back and looking to pass the ball out from the defence. Commanded the back line well and looks to have reformed his ace partnership with Nemanja. 8

Vidic – A monster both at the back and when attacking the Madrid goal. Came close with a thumping header. Desperately unlucky. 8

Evra – Given a mammoth job to do after being bombarded 2 vs. 1 for a large chunk of the second half. He had an impossible task. 7

Giggs – Been watching Ryan play for nearly 14 years now and I’ve yet to see him run as much as he did today. What an unbelievable footballer. 9

Carrick – Ran the show in the first half and stopped the Real Madrid midfield from creating any real attacks down the middle of the pitch. 8

Cleverley – Used his energy and passing to give the opposition midfield a torrid time. Looked to pass the ball wide and get the wingers involved when possible. 8

Welbeck – Monstrous performance from the Manc. He just picked up the ball and ran at the defence all night. Proud to see him in Red. 8

Nani – Set up our only goal and had some moments of class elsewhere as he ran behind the Real defence. Robbed in the second half. 7

Van Persie – Covered a lot of distance but never really looked like scoring. Put in a real shift regardless. 7

Reactions To Manchester United’s Defeat Against Real Madrid

Giggs was the least effective United player by far. What rubbish ratings!!!

Did you even watch the match? Giggs was incredible. All the papers agree in case you think I am on a solo run along with the author.

  2. Pre Munich Red says:

Can’t argue with any of these ratings.
Can’t understand Keano and Michael Owen’s reactions to the red card. If it is a red card anybody wanting to get an opponent sent off just has to wait until he tries to bring a high ball down and run into his foot. A very worrying precedent was set last night.
Incidentally, has there ever been an atmosphere like that last night at either Maine Road or at Wastelands? Nope, thought not unless it was when United played at Maine Road when OT was bombed

Welbeck was the stand out player for me, for me he should be a 9 cos he was really bossing things in the midfield. I think ur getting a bit too giddy bwt giggsy’s 1000th game, his performance was an 8 rather than a 9…….

Also for me Van Persie was very average (for a change) he was a 5 rather than a 7. The rest are very accurate :).

I thought Nani was higher than a seven, always looked like causing real trouble for Madrid and I wouldn’t mark him down for the card.

Cleverley struggled a little defensively especially early on, 8 is generous but he continues to improve.

Giggs, Welbeck and Carrick were all phenomenal, hard to separate them. Outstanding performances.
