Phelan wonders whether to agree with Sir Alex

In one of the more scary stories doing the rounds at the minute about Manchester United, Sir Alex could find himself sidelined for the opening games of the next campaign due to an imminent hip operation.

Starting the season without Ferguson for the first time since Liverpool were a dominant force in football seems unthinkable, but it could be a reality according to The Mirror, who note:

The Manchester United boss, 71, has been troubled by a hip problem for some time and will go under the knife before the Premier League campaign kicks off. But with only 18 days between United returning from their pre-season tour and the opening day of the league season, Fergie has left himself battling to be fit in time.

Senior United sources say they would be “amazed” if Ferguson – who could need a walking stick to aid his recovery – is in the dug-out for the start of next term in August.

United will need to hit the ground running next season, with the possibility of facing Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and a Manchester City side that will no doubt spend big this Summer.

Even if Sir Alex isn’t in the dugout for the Charity, sorry, ‘Community’ Shield and the season’s league opener, you’d be shocked if he wasn’t dispensing instructions from the comfort of his hospital bed.

The thought of Mickey Phelan being given something more arduous than placing out the cones fills me with dread…..
