Paul Scholes goal against Barcelona

The Ginger Prince shows Barcelona who’s boss in 2008

David Moyes will walk into Manchester United with one of the most difficult tasks in the history of football to contend with as not only is he succeeding the most successful manager in British football he’s also doing it without one of the greatest players.

It appears the Old Trafford hierarchy are well aware of the problems Moyes will face entering his tenure without Paul Scholes and are willing to offer him a helping hand by signing one of the few players who’s at least ‘nearly’ in the same bracket.

The Evening Standard has reported:

Standard Sport understands United are determined to make a huge signal of intent, following Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to retire, by luring Fabregas to Old Trafford while they are also attempting to buy back Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

It is believed contact has been made with Barcelona over Fabregas, who swapped the Emirates Stadium for the Nou Camp in a £35million deal just two years ago. Barcelona still owe the Gunners £5m of that fee and would be looking to recoup at least £20m for the Spain international.

The attempt to sign Ronaldo has been mentioned in several papers and whether there’s even the remotest chance of him returning to Old Trafford remains to be seen. Fabregas is a new development though and may be more obtainable than our former CR7.

Will the midfielder leave Barcelona? It’s doubtful as they are his boyhood club, but then again his time back there hasn’t exactly been a mitigated success as at times he’s found himself playing a bit-part role, while the club has failed to reach the dizzy heights it did before his arrival.

This may all be paper talk, but the signing of Fabregas would certainly soften the blow of losing the Ginger One. Just.
