United may actually sign a midfielder.

The juggernaut that is the Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United story seems to be gathering so much pace, its gone from a rumour, to a possibility to a likelihood to all but a done deal.

Thanks to David De Gea’s persuasion and the United’s board’s realisation that the whole in the middle of the park often needs filling with a player, the Reds seem on the brink of acquiring one of the brightest young talents in Spain.

The Telegraph notes:

Despite efforts this week by Barcelona to persuade the Spain Under-21 captain to reject offers to leave the Nou Camp this summer, it is understood that the attacking midfielder – the son of Brazil World Cup winner Mazinho – is ready to move to United to secure regular first-team football.

United are prepared to trigger a £17 million release clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, which is now in play due to Thiago failing to make a required number of appearances for Barcelona last season owing to the presence of Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas at the Spanish champions.

Thiago may not be the Fabregas that most Reds wanted from the Catalan giants but with youth on his side and plenty of experience at the highest level already, even the most demanding of fans should be happy if we do sign him. Let’s just hope this isn’t another Lucas Moura fiasco.

“Thiago may not be the Fabregas that most Reds wanted from the Catalan giants…”. Who said we want Fabregas? I never wanted him to join us, Thiago is by far the most talented young midfielder in Spain. It’s not a coincidence that Guardiola tied him with a 90 mil price tag…Luckily for us, Vilanova is a complete idiot for letting him go so easily.

Thiago is a real talent and I’m excited at the prospect of his signing. I can see Thiago and Kagawa linking up and getting the best out of each other. We still need defensive midfield player, but this is a great first signing by Moyes.
