Erm..how much? Wayne Rooney is set to sign a new long-term United deal making him one of the highest paid players in the world, according to the latest reports.

After seemingly wanting away from Old Trafford in the Summer and Chelsea reportedly making moves to sign him, Rooney has made something of a turnaround and seems set to commit to United for the rest of his career.

The Independent notes:

Wayne Rooney is close to committing his future to Manchester United with a four-and-a-half-year deal that will make him the Premier League’s leading earner on £300,000-a-week.

The England striker is with the United squad in Dubai on a training break. The deal is not yet signed but is sufficiently close to being agreed that the club have no fears of any further breakdown in talks.

Many fans may baulk at the wages being offered to Rooney, but with the club languishing in seventh place and the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea having the money to offer the former Everton striker whatever he demands, keeping him at the club is paramount.

    That’s encouraging.

If the figures quoted for the new contract and the offer of captaincy is true, I hope we are gaining something more than he offers at present. There are better technical players & better goal scorers so I hope we are not just lavishing these gifts on him because he is screaming and stamping his feet. I hope Moyes and the rest have an ulterior motive and I hope that it is to move Rooney back into midfield where he would be the perfect replacement for Paul Scholes. This would also release the number 10 position which would then make sense of the record purchase of J Mata it would also release capital for other purchases, mainly in defense.
