Tom Thorpe has returned to Old Trafford after damaging ligaments in his in ankle on his Birmingham debut on Saturday.

Thorpe, captain of United’s 2011 FA Youth Cup winning side, joined Birmingham along with Tyler Blackett and Kiko Macheda on deadline day and went straight into the side for Birmingham’s 3-3 draw with Derby.

But Thorpe was stretched off after 15 minutes and today it’s been revealed that the 21 year old has returned to Old Trafford to receive treatment on the ankle. It isn’t known how long he will be out for, but Birmingham are monitoring his recovery.

Manager Lee Clark, who has worked with Ravel Morrison and Jesse Lingard in the past, told Birmingham’s official website:

“We’re devastated for him.

“He’s a terrific kid and we were absolutely delighted to get someone of his quality. Manchester United rate him so highly and he’s been a brilliant lad.”

Thorpe is highly rated at United and many had hoped to see him go out on loan sooner than he has, so it is rather unfortunate that his time at Birmingham has been cut short.
