United’s search for defensive reinforcements looks set to continue in the January transfer window with reports Louis Van Gaal will renew his pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.

The Mirror notes:

Manchester United are set to make a fresh £35million bid to land Germany World Cup winner Mats Hummels.

United failed to land Hummels in the summer but are ready to test Borussia Dortmund’s resolve to hold on to their captain and star defender with a new offer.

Hummels remains United’s top defensive target and there is a growing belief at Old Trafford that a deal can be done during this month’s transfer window.

There’s no doubt United desperately need a defender considering the amount of injuries we’ve had to endure this season and the fact a youngster like Paddy McNair has had to be called upon simply highlights the problems Van Gaal faces.

Hummels would be a great signing for the Reds and £35 million for someone of his quality is to be expected. If United can add Hummels and perhaps one more defender in the window then maybe we’ll be set for a real title charge in the second half of the season.
