Marcus set to start on Wednesday

For probably the first time in months United have options up front that don’t resemble a who’s who of underachieving strikers. Wayne Rooney looked sharp and keen against Aston Villa, Marcus Rashford is beginning to look like a prodigy, while Anthony Martial actually is one. Throw the likes of Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Memphis into the mix and you’ve got some highly talented options.

Van Gaal needs more than a result, he needs a performance to convince the underwhelmed home fans he’s not given up completely on bothering with entertaining football. Here’s how the Reds could line up- with a different role for Timothy Fosu-Mensah than many of us are used to.

4-2-3-1 formation: David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford.
