Anthony Martial may not have scored for the Reds during the opening weeks of the season but Jose Mourinho believes his young striker is getting a raw deal due to United’s poor performances last season.

Martial silenced his critics during his first campaign, ignoring the idiots who claimed he was a waste of money before he’d even kicked a ball, by finishing as the Reds top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, including one against Liverpool on his debut and the winner in the FA Cup semi final.

Expectations were naturally high for the 20 year-old former Monaco striker this season and despite United’s positive start some pundits have questioned Martial’s performances. The France international’s not been helped by a very public spat with his ex-wife which saw her speak to a newspaper about their relationship breakdown and him taking to social media to criticise her actions.

Despite his lack of a goal this campaign Martial has still played his part in United’s hat-trick of victories of late and Mourinho was quick to point out the fact due to the Reds being ‘average’ for much of last season, the striker became lauded for standing out as one of the few shining lights. This season with the Reds doing much better, the high standard of Martial’s performances have been less noticed, United have stormed to the top of the league and the online soccer odds on them winning the title have shortened greatly over the past few weeks.

ManUtd.com notes how in his press conference Mourinho stated:

“When a team is not playing particularly great and is at an average level, then someone comes to the top. Last season, no Martial meant no three points,”

“This season we’ve had no Martial goals and three victories. The team is okay; other players are scoring goals. I think he is performing more than okay and I wouldn’t expect more than that at this stage.”
