Manchester United could be set to beat Liverpool and Barcelona for one of the most highly rated midfielders in Europe with reports that the Reds have begun negotiations with Saul Niguez’s agent.

The Atletico Madrid maestro who helped Diego Simeone’s side win La Liga last season could be available for around the £60 million mark and reports indicate United are moving forward with efforts to bring him to Old Trafford.

The Daily Star notes:

Manchester United are believed to be progressing in their attempts to strengthen their midfield this summer as negotiations with Saul Niguez’s representatives take a ‘decisive step’.

The Red Devils have leapfrogged rivals Liverpool in the race for the Atletico Madrid playmaker, who had been strongly linked with Manchester City earlier in the window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will now look to capitalise on the collapse of a swap deal between Atleti and Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann to seal their latest signing.

With Jadon Sancho expected to be announced any day now and the Reds linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, who looks set to become a United player later this month, bagging Niguez would represent something of a phenomenal window for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and give fans every reason to believe a title challenge is possible next season.

With Tom Heaton also returning to Old Trafford it’s been a busy Summer so far for United, but Solskjaer may have to sell players to fund a move for Niguez, with Jesse Lingard and David De Gea two candidates who could find themselves leaving Old Trafford.

De Gea has been linked with Juventus, among other clubs, while Lingard remains a target for West Ham who saw him shine during a loan spell there last season, bagging nine goals and four assists in a a glorious four month spell.
