A few months ago the idea of Jose Mourinho replacing Louis Van Gaal would’ve seemed completely ridiculous as United went top of the league following a win over Sunderland, while Chelsea despite their early season struggle were expected to turn things around.  That turnaround never materialised and it’s actually United who’ve seen a reversal of fortune of sorts as a once buoyant title charge has petered out into a drab run of mediocrity that’s seen the Reds fall off the pace somewhat and perhaps more importantly fail to progress from an ‘easy’ Champions League group.

With Chelsea sacking their manager and United going off the boil it seems a change of management at Old Trafford isn’t the far-fetched notion it once seemed.

The Independent notes:

Jose Mourinho is targeting Manchester United as his next managerial job, The Independent has learned, and intermediaries have already taken the first steps in trying to make it happen.

Chelsea sacked the 52-year-old on Thursday, but it is felt that could finally open the way for the Portuguese to get the post that many feel he has long coveted, especially given the ongoing dissatisfaction at Old Trafford with Louis van Gaal.

Whether this is more media nonsense or actually true remains to be seen but it does make sense given the recent apathy towards Louis Van Gaal’s tenure- watch this space….
