Could the Everton youngster follow Rooney to Old Trafford from Goodison?

United’s policy of buying youngsters could carry on in January with reports suggesting Everton starlet Ross Barkley is next on the Reds radar.

The Manchester Evening News notes:

United are in hot pursuit of Everton’s latest wonder kid – 17-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley.

The Reds are keen to raid Goodison Park again after the success of their 2004 £30m plunge for Wayne Rooney – when he was the same age – and are weighing up a move when the transfer window reopens in January.

It is understood the champions have attempted to persuade Everton manager David Moyes to sell during the window that closed last week – and were prepared to allow Darron Gibson to move to Merseyside and offer cash as well in order to land the starlet.

Barklay is a 6ft 2in box-to-box goalscoring, powerful midfielder in the Bryan Robson mould.

This site has long been an admirer of both Darron Gibson and also Ryan Tunnicliffe who is a player similar to that of Barkley.

Whether the deal will actually be made is open to conjecture but should Sir Alex decide against it, then it may not be too disastrous. Gibson looks set for the exit door no matter what, but in Tunnicliffe United have a player who may just be capable of filling that ‘box to box’ void that’s been at Old Trafford since the days of Roy Keane.
