David Moyes officially starts work today as manager of Manchester United and is determined to hit the ground running as he succeeds to most successful manager in British football history.
While the Wayne Rooney saga and the pursuit of Leighton Baines dominate much of the headlines, the new boss is reported to have somehow found time to finalise a deal for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay.
The Mirror reports:
David Moyes officially starts at Manchester United today – and he has the green light to sign Benfica’s Ezeguiel Garay.
The Argentina centre-half has been on the radar since February – as revealed by MirrorSport – and a £17million swoop has moved closer after Benfica lined up his replacement.
The Portuguese club are set to sign another Argentinian, Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez from Arsenal de Sarandi, to replace him, with the classy 23-year-old moving for around £3.5m and allowing Benfica the chance to sell Garay.
The signing of a centre back hardly seems logical at United given the fact we currently have Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and also Phil Jones in the squad. A move for Garay could come ahead of one of the current centre backs making an exit with Nemanja Vidic rumoured to be a target for AC Milan. Either way, one positive is we don’t need to worry about Moyes taking his time to get on with the job, he seems to be determined to get his business done early.
