Bryan Robson Maradona

The best player of all time- shaking hands with Maradona

It may seem like a bold statement to make about a United legend who’s had more stunning performances in a red shirt than the entire current first team squad put together but please allow me to elucidate.

Imagine this scenario, United are two nil down from the first leg against Barcelona in the Cup winners cup. A certain Diego Armando Maradona is the star player for a Barca side that also features the likes of Alesanco, Bernd Schuster and Victor.

Robson not only makes Maradona wish he’d never bothered to get on the plane to Manchester, he also goes about destroying the Barcelona team with a brace of goals and all round barnstorming performance that gives United a three nil win.

Although ‘Captain Marvel’ gave United 10/10 performances on a regular basis, this game is the one that many older Reds describe as his finest hour. Similar to Roy Keane’s in Turin, Robbo dominated a game against supposedly superior opposition with such ferocity and gusto you could almost feel sorry for the Catalans.

Robson was carried off the pitch by the Old Trafford crowd at the final whistle as United fans recognised one of the all-time greats giving one of the all time greatest performances.

News that Robson is battling cancer has shocked every United fan worldwide.

But as Maradona will no doubt testify when you take on Robson, there’s only one winner.
