De Gea celebrates

The Spanish stopper hears he's heading to Old Trafford

Atletico Madrid’s Spanish Under 21 Goalkeeper is attending a Manchester United medical today according to reports.

Sky Sports notes: “David de Gea has arrived in England and is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed move to Manchester United.

“The Spanish goalkeeper has been identified by Sir Alex Ferguson as the long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford.

“United are prepared to spend upwards of £17million in order to secure his signature, with it widely agreed that he is the most promising shot-stopper in Europe.

“De Gea underlined his obvious potential on Saturday as he helped Spain to European U21 Championship glory.”

With Ashley Young and Phil Jones already being added to United’s squad this Summer the only area possibly left for improvement is the central midfield department.

The big question remaining is will Sir Alex spend on a new midfielder or trust the likes of Darren Fletcher, Tom Cleverley, Anderson or maybe even Paul Pogba or Ryan Tunnicliffe to do a job there next season?

Personally I’d like to see United’s younger players given a chance, they may be in their teens but Tunnicliffe and Pogba look like men against boys when they turn out for the academy.

Tom Cleverley has more than doen enough to be given a shot at trying to add some creative flair to the midfield now that the Ginger One has retired.

Whether Fergie will thin kthe same remains to be seen and there are still rumours flying around that another big name signing is on their way.
