Could the German midfielder be heading to Old Trafford?

United’s Summer spending may not be over, despite what Sir Alex Ferguson claimed recently, according to reports today.

With Wesley Sneijder now looking increasingly unlikely to end up at Old Trafford, the United boss has turned his attention to one of the Bundesliga’s rising stars.

The Sunday Express notes:

Manchester United have switched their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Goetze after becoming frustrated in their attempt to sign Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

United watched 19-year-old Goetze run the midfield in Germany’s 3-2 win against Brazil in Stuttgart last week, a high-profile friendly in which he also scored.

Goetze is rated the best young talent in the Bundesliga after helping Borussia land the title last season, and he has attracted the interest of Real Madrid and Barcelona. United know they would have a fight to persuade Dortmund to sell.

Goetze is contracted at Dortmund until 2014 and is valued at £20million. United updated their dossier on him after it became clear that neither Inter Milan nor Sneijder were prepared to budge on the fee or wages.

Whether Sir Alex would be tempted to try and sign the midfielder this transfer window remains to be seen but with Real Madrid and Barcelona also interested he may have to act sooner rather than later, particularly after losing out on Alexis Sanchez and Raphael Varane to the Spanish clubs.

Signing a nineteen year old would certainly fit in with United’s transfer policy of late, where up and coming youngsters- with the exception of Ashley Young- have been signed in favour of big money established players.

    i hope this is true

  2. Jim says:

Rubbish, we have Tom. don’t need him.

    • jack says:

goetze is one of the best young players, you have obviously not seen him play, he is better than cleverly

      • Jim says:

I wasn’t saying he is rubbish, I meant the report. If we buy him, how will Cleverly and Pogba get the chance they deserve to show what they can do??

        • kumar says:

There is no problem at all. this because we need at least 2 players in midfields. because perhaps there is tom Cleverley and pogba available, we must remember that hardly need a replacement for Ryan Giggs advancely.. so it will be better and good for The red devils to sign Mario Goetze from Germany international because its a supportive and strong midfielders will be added in Man United after Tom cleverley and Pogba in midfields.. we wil be stronger and powerful for long term..

          cheers guys!!!

Pogba is only 18, he’ll have plenty of time! But i seriously have doubts about cleverly. I think you need a midfield maestro with experience to blood the young players, who else would they learn from??? Carrick or Fletcher? ha ha. We havent 1ONE world class or even really good central midfielder! We’ll struggle in the CL this season. Sneijder is the one for the job!

  3. TK99 says:

I really hope so . but it’s highly unlikely.Dortmund has already lost Nuri Sahin..He’s a magnificent player and 19 years old.

  4. Is unlikely 4 him to play trade in england.

  5. klaw says:

we must bye one more player and Mario Goetze is perfect for united!!

  6. Skillerspeed says:

I’ve seen him play very good player already hard to believe his only 19. Hope utd get him but highly unlikely now.

  7. United1999 says:

He is a special player, we don’t massively need him but he would be a great addition to our team for the future and we could see Gibson sold on asap, wouldn’t want him to stop Pogba playing though as that boy is class!

  8. BenUtd says:

He recently said that he wasn’t keen on moving abroad and the fact that Dortmund lost Sahin means that him leaving is very unlikely.

I’ve seen him play a few times and this lad would be a star for any team. During the 2010 World Cup, people were talking about how Mesut Ozil will be starring for Germany for years, but already his position is under threat because of how good Goetze is. If United do sign him, then the sky’s the limit.

  9. Chol Abraham says:

we need a strong midfielder this summer and i think this young boy of 19 can serve for Manchester United for some good time.

I would say no chance. Fergie has been quite clear that we are going with the younger players like Paul Pogba and Tom Cleverley to fill gaps that have been created by Scolesey’s retirement and the imminent departure of Gibson. I saw this reported today by The Express (I think) and its just a ridiculous story that seems to be a complete shot in the dark. Why would Dortmund sell Goetze when he has four years to run on his contract and for £20M? They could get that sum all day long for him. There is just no logic in this story. If Sir Alex gives Pogba and Cleverley their chance this season then the pair of them will be £20M players by this time next year, they are that good
