David De Gea

"It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C...."

I’d like to pretend the above comment was an isolated one from a disgruntled fan following the Spanish keeper’s poor showing against West Brom but unfortunately it wasn’t.

The wonderful interweb was awash with silly dramatic statements calling for a 20 year-old making his Premier League debut to be ‘dropped’ ‘sold’ or even ‘released’ by so-called Reds who know more about footballers than Sir Alex Ferguson.

Don’t get me wrong I was as disappointed as any United fan at the ease with which Shane Long scored West Brom’s equaliser and felt De Gea seemed to look a severe liablity for most of the game, but it’s time -as so often is the case after a United game- for a bit of rational perspective.

De Gea made a mistake for the goal and was extremely indecisive at times but that doesnt mean the most sought after young ‘keeper in world football is suddenly bereft of ability. Keepers make mistakes, and it seems some people can’t help but try and appear witty and knowledgable by spouting drivel such as “he’s another Taibi” without realising they appear niether witty or knowledgable merely ungrateful and unoriginal.

I said in an article on this very site when we signed De Gea that the fans may have to exercise a little patience with him and we could well prove why we are the best in the world by not getting on his case if he does take time to adjust.

Although I wasn’t at the Hawthorns friends that were there tell me the travelling United contigent didn’t give the Spaniard any more reason to feel anxious than he already had. There was no booing or chants of “Edwin Van Der Sar” and rightly so.

The next test comes against Spurs at Old Trafford a week on Monday where we’ll see not only if De Gea’s nerves have settled somewhat but how 70 odd thousand United fans treat him should he show signs that he’s still struggling to adapt to life at the biggest club in the world.

I was at the Southampton game when Massimo Taibi allowed Matt Le Tissier’s daisy cutter through his legs and you knew immediately his United career was over. Taibi wasn’t a 20 year-old £20 million signing that had been touted as the best young goalkeeper on the planet.

De Gea’s not had the best start to his United career but I fully expect him to be at Old Trafford for many years to come, winning lots of trophies and keeping many clean sheets. Let’s not forget, the likes of Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic had United debuts to forget.

Given time De Gea will no doubt show why Sir Alex forked out such a large amount for a young player who had no experience of the Premiership. It may be difficult for some of us to stomach and I’m sure there’ll be times when we feel like screaming at the poor lad, but in the words of the great Gary Barlow “we need a little patience.”

  1. he’s a good keeper he should get a chance selling him now would be crazy

Agree 100% with the article. Those who call for him to be sold after one match are not true fans, they are idiots. I was also disappointed with the goal he conceded, but we all knew that this could happen. He is a 20 year old kid coming from Spain. It would have been naive for us to think he would come right in without any problems, and make us forget that VDS even retired.

If people need to see how hard it can be for goalkeepers to move clubs, then they need to see Manuel Neuer last week. A top class goalkeeper and he made an error on his first game. Bayern Munich ended up losing the match 1-0. He is still in the same league and has more experience, so you can imagine how difficult it must be for David De Gea.

De Gea needs to improve and learn quickly. Goalkeeping is an unforgiving position, which is why you need to be a little crazy to do it. We have a week with De Gea now and he needs to get in the gym and on the training field. Eric Steele will need to work overtime with the lad and help him get through this. I hope over the next couple of months he improves his physique and his language skills. We signed him knowing these improvements would be required. He was never the finish article and will need the fans support.

good that he’s making mistakes now. he’ll learn from them and will make him much better

Was a abit alarmed when i saw the headline that it wasn’t irony!!! Its so stupid for people to be making judgements after a couple of games. If that was true Schmeichel would never have got past his Wimbledon and Leeds debut games. De Gea may very well end up not being the answer to the great VDS. He certainly has the talent, he needs to build his strength to cope with the EPL. He may very well end up the best keeper in the world. ” games is too early. He is Young and he will lose us goals as he gains the experience he needs to be world class. For those who think we bought wrong. Have a look at Neuer’s debut… he lost them the game and hes suppose to be vastly more experienced. Give hime time. Then make a valued judgement.

Lol, for once Arsenal have a better keeper than us! Oh the return to the days of Barthez!
    GOOD START LIVERPOOL!

  6. Paul says:

How many games has De Gea played ? 2! How many games have we lost ? 0!

Give the lad a chance, New surrounding and new players infront of him. He is only 20 and playing in the toughest league in the world. I remember Schmeichel having a bit of a nightmare in his start at Man Utd.

    He will come good 🙂

  7. Bushman says:

Hes a good keeper.. Though i think he should bulk up. Then he’ll be great!

  8. matt says:

who ever is coming out with staement like this deserves to be sent down so they can get bummed out on a daily basis by an aids infested inmate. 2 games and people are already writing him opff, for fucks sake.

OMG I’m sick to the back teeth with all this De Gea bashing. One mistake (not convinced CS second goal was a mistake the first one really wasn’t) what about the blinding save before he let that one in. What about the other saves during the match, what about his great distribution, what about the great saves in the CS. Why the hell did the ref give a corner when he was clearly fouled (twice). Why the hell aren’t we focusing on the good and they was more good than bad. We haven’t lost a sodding game yet, but the way people are banging on you’d think we’d lost by 6 or 7 every time we’ve had him between the sticks. WTF…

The media in this country is a bloody disgrace and the sodding pundits are imbeciles, and the united fans giving him a hard time should shut the f**k up and give him a chance. We could lose, potentially the greatest GK in the world if this carries on and all that talent will be reaped by another club. This team are shaping up to be the best team since giggs, scholes, beckham, butt, the Nevilles et al …so I’m reserving judgement until next season…I’m giving him this season to bed in, to gain in confidence and then take the PL by storm next season. Go DE GEA….!!!
