Tom Cleverley

Will Tom Cleverley play today?

United’s Community Shield hero Tom Cleverley has been called up by England boss Fabio Capello after Michael Carrick and Jack Wilshere were sent back to their clubs.

Cleverley could face Holland at Wembley on Wednesday night ironically lining up against the man many expect to keep him out of the United line-up: Wesley Sneijder.

Such was Cleverley’s impressive showing in the Community Shield that some have even questioned whether United really need to spend upwards of £30 million bringing in the 27 year-old Dutchman when the answer to our midfield problems could be a lot closer to home.

Wednesday night could prove the perfect opportunity for Cleverley to prove that when it comes to ability, he’s not as far from his Dutch counterpart as many think.

Speaking of his United team-mates call up Ashley Young commented:

“Tom has done terrific all pre-season. He was brilliant when he came on in the Community Shield and he has a great future ahead of him.

“I am sure he will go on to be a top player. He is confident in his own ability and I am sure he will come here and do well.”

With Danny Welbeck expected to be given a start against the Dutch on Wednesday if he and Cleverley do play together it could give England the type of football that dazzled Manchester City on Sunday.
