The youngster seems set for the first team this season

The signing of Owen Hargeaves by Manchester City has caused more than a few Reds to wonder whether United were right to let the curly haired one join the ‘noisy neighbours.’

Hargreaves has played practically no football for over two years, but there’s no denying that when he did feature regularly for the first team he was an integral part of its our success. That was 2007/08 when United experienced our second most successful season ever.

As our less successful neighbours like to remind us though:” its about the future not the past” and this season Sir Alex Ferguson has taken great strides to ensure United’s future is rosy. Phil Jones, David De Gea are two of Europe’s brightest youngsters and have already shown their capable of becoming United legends, while Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley have not just shown they’re potentially two future England as well as United stars.

Sir Alex Ferguson knows the importance of youth and one young player who’s been getting everyone at Old Trafford excited is a certain young Frenchman : Paul Pogba.

The former Le Harve man – or should that be ‘boy’- has been compared to Patrick Vieira, not just because he’s black and gangly but also because of his ability to get stuck in and be a real box to box type driving player.  Pogba looks like a man against boys when he’s playing for the academy, he’s something of a Wayne Rooney -type phenomenon.

This season Sir Alex has stated his intention to give the youngster a chance. Speaking in August Sir Alex said:

“I mean if we hold Pogba back, what’s going to happen? He’s going to leave. You know, in a couple of years’ time when his contract is going to finish. So we have to give him the opportunity to see how he can do in the first-team and he’s got great ability, plus he’s got the physique and athleticism.”

United are moving forward this season and Pogba seems like the next academy member set to be given a chance. Hargreaves when fit is a very good player, but the question is would keeping him have scuppered Pogba’s progress and possibly have been a step backwards.

Owen Hargreaves was an important member of a great winning side, just as Paul Scholes, Edwin Van Der Sar and Wes Brown were. I’ve a sneaky feeling Paul Pogba will a be an important member of a winning side for many years to come.

Alex is a world expert on being “noisy”; just ask the fourth official. In fact ask the refs also as they go down the tunnel. He’s a “noisy old man”, a disgrace. And as far as winning anything this season, don’t forget what the noisy old man said, “You never win anything with kids.” Especially with one in goal like De Gea. Every match he lets in a howler. The whole defence is going to be looking over their shoulders all season. You can’t win over a long season with a “howler a match” goalkeeper.

We shouldn’t worry about Hargreaves going to Man City. He is a 30 year old that hasn’t played football for three seasons now. It will be difficult for him to return to the same level and he will most likely always pick up niggles now. Saha has never been fully fit since he left Man Utd and still gets injured here and there.

I think his time was up and we had to look to the future. It was frustrating waiting for him to return but the time had come to separate. I think Paul Pogba has a great chance now to break into the team now. I also think it was about giving Anderson and Cleverely more responsibility as well. I’m hoping the three of them together will have a big impact this season.

Weird that he’s NOT even on the Champions league Squad! Neither does he have a squad number!

Good article – it probably was time for him to move on from you guys. I feel a bit sorry for him – and did even before he joined us. I don’t blame reds for feeling narked about it though, I’d be lying if I said I’d be cool with it the other way round. I don’t know, maybe he should’ve gone elsewhere to get more game time – surely he’ll be the new Vieira for us and thus a cameo late on when we’re winning or losing.

He has got a squad number though; he’s number 20. The CL position will be reviewed at the knock out stages, should we get that far…

De Gae a United Legend? Maybe, but only for City fans.

  7. Gibraltarian says:

With a one year contract I don’t believe Pogba’s progress would have been stifled and I don’t think it an undue risk. If Hargraves plays a blinder for City it will be a huge, and painful, irony. The fact is that we also need a defensive midfield player despite the focus being (rightly) on the acquisition of a creative midfield player. I hope SFA is true to his word and plays Pogba but I don’t think he has even been on the bench for the last three games.
