Could Gary Cahill be the signing United need to make in January?

Is Gary Cahill the the man to buy in January and not a central midfielder? For most Reds the answer is something along the lines of ‘I think you’ll find he’s a centre half, not a central midfielder!’ which is quite correct too! Yet I feel with the injury to our captain, Nemanja Vidic this is an area that needs more cover! With Rio’s fitness constantly a hot topic for discussion I don’t feel 100% that he’ll be fit from one game to the next.

With these two both missing it’s down to the kids to fill in (Or Michael Carrick) and in the big games come squeaky bum time, I’m not sure that’ll be enough. Having Cahill on the books could also strengthen the midfield by freeing Phil Jones to be used in there, as well as ltting Carrick worry about his midfield duties and not the dread chat with Sir Alex ”Michael, I need you to do a job at centre half” again. With his contract running out in the summer and the stalling negotiations with Chelsea it would seem like a good bit of business! I have however read that Cahill’s demands are a modest signing on fee of of £4,000,000!!! And £100,000 a week in wages after that, a little more than I’d have expected him to be worth. For me if we sign a central midfielder, I don’t want another cheap stopgap, I’d rather get the real deal and history would suggest that these deals are best left to summer to allow the marquee signing a preseason at the club to settle in.

With Cahill coming from Bolton, he has plenty of Premier League experience, and is an England International used to our food, weather, culture etc. There’s also the returns of Anderson (looking sharp with his new haircut) and Tom Cleverley, a man that improves every time he enters a football field! Don’t get me wrong Luka Modric if you do happen to read this, I think you’d look fantastic in red, but that’s for another discussion!

I would much prefer a better ball playing CB like the Sebian Subotic. But unfortuately he might take time to settle and get used to the EPL. Therefore Cahill is a good fit at the moment.
It is obvious that we need replacements for Vidic and Fletcher asap, both long term injuries.
We cant forever hang our hats on Cleverley to be fit and Pogba and Morrison to develop. The best way to develop these players is to play them when the team is in good winning form.

I think Ferguson is right in saying that he wouldn’t buy a player that wouldn’t get into the team when everybody is fit and when everybody is fit there is no hope of Gary Cahill getting into the team if thats the case.

How long do you wait for players to get fit mate. Vida not this season? Ferdinand in and out so not this season. Jones not ready yet.(Personally i think he look’s better in midfield). Evans sorry he is never going to make it. Smalling Eventually Yes.But for fuck’s sake as bad as midfield is we need some defenders badly.

i think we should buy him then at the end of the season we should say thank you very much and good bye to rio then we can play him and vidic in the centre smalling at right-back,jones at defensive mid and we also need to play pogba and morrison because we will regret it if they both leave due to a lack of play time because both are future world class player without doubt.

If we don’t buy now though and get cover at the back I fear it may hand the title to City! Agree totally about not buying someone that won’t play when everyone is fully fit, but with Rio’s constant injury worries, and Jones’ versatility I think Cahill and Vida would be a strong centre half partnership! Not sure he’ll still be available in the summer if Chelsea’s pursuit is successful!

in an ideal world we would sign 3/4 players but i doubt we will sign one.
we would also be able to get a better player for a fair price but this world doesnt exist.

cahill for £7m is good value he could slot straight in as he knows the league and probably wont even have to move house. given the injuries/illness in that area and that rb is also a bit of a mess we could do with another body.

i will still be hoping for the creative and defensive midfielders we need but if we couldnt find/get them sorted in the summer is hard to think that we will do it now.

I don’t get this wait till Cleverly gets back rubbish. He might play well against a Wigan but not a top European side. Same goes with alot of our team but we have to stand side by side. United will Never Die!!!!
