The figures being bandied around for Everton’s Leighton Baines have been enough to make many of us question just what David Moyes is thinking before he even officially takes charge at Old Trafford.
£20 million for a 28 year-old left back who’s spent much of his career being the ‘second best English left back’ may seem a little high, but there may be more to it than meets the eye.
According to reports Patrice Evra may be set for a return to Monaco which could result in part of the Baines fee being paid for. There’s also news that United are still pursuing Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, which may seem completely unnecessary but then again not if Nemanja Vidic heads to AC Milan which is a move doing the rounds in certain sections of the press.
Losing Evra and Vidic for Baines and Garay may seem like a sideways step at best although the age of both United skipper and his vice captain means that they won’t have too many years left in them. It’s a scary time for Reds as new boss Moyes succeeds Sir Alex and the prospect of losing two experienced defenders isn’t likely to assuage any doubts but if the club are to move forward under a new regime maybe it’s time to let some legends leave.
Wooooooooooooooooow, Baines is goooooood for United.
