Is the Scouser worth it?

United are prepared to up their offer for Leighton Baines to around the £20 million mark after the Goodison Park club rejected the initial £12 million bid.

According to reports the Old Trafford board have sanctioned a deal that will allow David Moyes to make an improved offer.

The Mail notes:

Manchester United will make a renewed bid of £15million plus add-ons for Everton defender Leighton Baines.

After rejecting an opening bid in the region of £12m from United, Everton insist the England left back is not for sale.

But United hope to persuade them with a deal that will total £20m including additional performance-related payments for the 28-year-old.

£20 million for a 28 year-old may seem excessive and it could well prove foolish should Baines fail to live up to the expectations already being placed upon him. It’s worth noting that despite having little re-sale value the defender is a proven Premier League player, something that automatically seems to carry a £10 million surcharge.

Personally I don’t think United need to fork out £20 for a left back who’s never quite hit the highs that Patrice Evra has, but then again, I didn’t think we needed to sign Robin Van Persie so what do I know?

Really struggling to see why we would need Baines, good player but we have Buttner & Fabio as well as Smalling/Jones if needs be. In all honesty I feel a defensive midfielder & a creative attacker is all we need unless Rooney departs

Iam a everton fan we luv bainse I also luved moyes not now hes starting to piss us everton fans off yes why would a team like man utd whant bainsey team like them could get better quality and younger but if moyse whants to pay out 20million for him then thats bad managment To all man u fans get on tweet and show moysey your not happy

Your struggling to see why utd want the best left back in the league?I’m a utd fan but evra was disgraceful in defence last season and the amount of goals conceded because of him was too much.Fabio hasn’t played much football over the past year so won’t up to it and buttner is far to rash.Baines would be a fantastic signing and he’s at his peak.

never hit the heights evra has? wow! check the stats mate baines created more than ANY player in the PL (midfielders & attackers included) last year and year before no full back in the league comes close

  3. Nathon Woodhead says:

    No no no no no.

Not even as good as Evra. He offers a deadly set piece, but so does Van Persie.

I really hope we do not sign Baines.

    • jack says:

Baines is currently a level above evra and if u actually watch utd games u wud realise that evra is a liability in defence and the only weak link.A back 4 of Rafael-jones-vidic-Baines would be great

  4. GAZZARO says:

Baines is a good player, but his class is still behind Evra really. Evra can still play at top level for at least 2 more years which will give Buttner and other youngsters more time to discover themselves.

Paying 20 million for a 28 years old full back is very much too high really. We need to sign a top class general midfielder. One more top class winger should be brought in especially if Nani goes, as Valencia and Young are both terrible really.

  5. tayedinho19 says:

it will be foolish if we sign baines because we have buttner nd fabio and evra who can still perform for some years to come

  6. dave says:

Wow, some fans on here don’t understand football. Baines would be a great signing for utd, evra is shocking

  7. Trevor says:

Why would Moyes pay £20 M. For Baines when there are full backs just as good for half the price.
With Fergie and his brother the Chief Scout out of the club Moyses scouts should be able to bring someone in.
When you look at the previous scouting system who did Machester sign that they did not pay through the nose for Even the youth he brought in the 18′ 19 and 20 year olds news
Ver seemed to make the first team, so lets hope Moyes has a better scouting system.

  8. jack says:

Man utd will be buying the best leftback in the league so he can only improve the team i’m shocked by all the negative comments from utd fans who clearly havn’t watched utd enough to realise what a liability evra is in defence and also baines has more to his game and he would be a great player for the next 4 years

  9. Marvel says:

Baines will be 29 in December twelve months from there all the media will be saying he’s past his best !! He hasn’t hardly played for England has been sent home for being homesick need I go on? oh yes Wayne Rooney is only valued at 20 25m and isn’t he the best English player if not shirt seller none of it makes sense KEEP EVRA

  10. eric the king says:

Depends on how much we get for evra. 16 is reasonable for Baines. My opinion gor many years has been he’s the closest thing I’ve seen to Denis Irwin.
