United could be set to land the centre back Sir Alex Ferguson wanted three and a half years ago with news that Raphael Varane is a target for Louis Van Gaal.
Real Madrid’s Varane was reportedly wanted by Sir Alex back in 2011 when the youngster was making an impression at Lens but he chose Jose Mourinho’s side instead- something that could scupper the deal this time around.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is hoping to take advantage of the interest coming from Chelsea and Manchester United in January.
The 21-year-old is being kept out by Carlo Ancelotti’s favoured partnership of Pepe and Sergio Ramos in the heart of the defence.
Recent reports have linked Varane with a move away during the winter window, with both Chelsea and United credited with an interest
United’s defence has been nothing short of shambolic at times this season – not helped by a plague of injuries that belongs in biblical times. Chelsea may be able to offer Varane the chance to work with his old boss, but if the Reds splash the cash like they did in the Summer then maybe he could be joining his former team mate Angel Di Maria at Old Trafford.
