Jose Mourinho Alex Ferguson

Is sooner rather than later better for the Special One?

After today’s SunSport revelation that Jose Mourinho reckons he will get the United job at the end of next season, it leaves the question open to whether we want, or need the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’

The Sun reported that “The Special One wants to take over as Manchester United boss at the end of next season – and reckons he will get the job.”

Mourinho also believes that “the way will be open for him in the summer of 2012.”

After his treble winning success with Inter last season, it certainly proved that he may indeed be special, maybe not the ‘special one’ but definitely good, and most definitely good enough for United. Just look at how poor Inter have been since he left, first under Rafa Benitez and now under Leonardo.
With regards to taking over at United, I’ve been asking a tricky and debateable question for over a year now.

Would you prefer to have four or five more seasons with Fergie, stay loyal and have some success, with the risk of getting in an average manager after he leaves and going another 10, 15 maybe 20 years of little or no success?

Or…
Should we let Fergie go now or next season, on a high, and start as fresh, in a new era under Mourinho? Instead of having no success for 10, 15 years we have a continued success and extend our dominance for another decade or two?
We’ve heard over the years that no player is bigger than the club. Instead, should this comment be no one is bigger than the club? Including the manager?

Paul ‘Guvnor’ Ince, Beckham, van Nistelrooy, Keane, have all been shown the door over the years, to prove this statement, but should it apply to the manager as well? To prolong United’s dominance and success, should the main man responsible for all our success leave?
This question might come as a surprise to you all, with us still on track for a treble. But for the long-term foundation of the club I think we should get Mourinho in at the earliest possible opportunity.

I think Mourinho is the only manager in the world that can take over the reins at Old Trafford from Fergie. His CV speaks for itself, Champions League win with Porto, two leagues with Chelsea (the first for how long?) a number of league wins and a treble at Inter, as well as taking Real Madrid to the semi-final of the Champions League this season (the first time in 6 years), and a possible encounter with United in the final.

You could say that we don’t need Mourinho, we’ll get another top class manager instead. Maybe so, but I don’t think any other manager in the world can come in and emulate what Fergie has achieved at the club. Coming to United after Fergie would carry so much stress and pressure, I feel the only man who can take and handle that pressure would be Mourinho, he’s had success where ever he has gone.

The author’s post is nonsensical. The thrust of the piece is to replace a man who has been around for over two decades, and who has rebuilt the team innumerable times, with someone who will commence a similar program for the future. Yet every man and his dog knows that Mourinho’s modus operandi is to take over good squads, add his special touch for a few years, then move on. He is not a club man, his judgment is poor in the transfer market, and he doesn’t give a hoot about youth development because he cares only about immediate results. Why do you think he’s built up such an impressive record over the years? Because he never takes on clubs that need work, nor does he stay around long enough to rebuild aging teams. It’s thus very easy to build up a stellar CV when all you do is take over squads that have been carefully built up by others, ride the gravy train while the success lasts, then move on. While he may be one of the few with the personality and strength of character to take on the daunting task of replacing Sir Alex, in the long term he would doubtless leave the club in poor circumstances, unlike Fergie who is doing everything possible to ensure that the future of the club is well taken care of via all the youth players currently coming through.

I think Mourhino’s style of football depends on players at the club at the time. Chelski with Robben, Duff etc played some very attacking, attracitive football. Not as gunho as United but very close. When those two wingers left he played a more defensive game, suited to European Cup, as has SAF thru the years. The style will depend on the players we have when he takes over.
The point about him staying at one club long enough is the one that bothers me. Success is built over many years as SAF has proven. Maybe he was bought in by Chelski, Inter and now Fake Madrid to win instant trophies. Which he has done. If those clubs gave him the mandate to build and stay for a long term who’s to say he wont be able to do it. To me Pep Gaurdiola hasnt really proven that he could take a club and build a club, he inherited a very good experinced squad and hasnt had to develop and expose young players to his team. Even though I have some reservations about Jose, I think he is the one when SAF decides it is time. Then SAF can oversee Jose until he gets up to speed with being at the biggest club in the world.

Let fergie to decide! It is just the way, to take the best out of him( jose).

Mourinho? No, thanks!! Simple reason: He won’t stay at United after 2, mayb 3 seasons at the most…remember he once said he wants to manage the Portuguese national team as well?? How do u know he won’t leave United soon?? There’s no guarantee with Jose…he is class, no doubt about that…anyone who can lead the shitty Inter to a treble has to be good…but he’s just not United class…remember, in United we don’t look for ‘excellent’…we look for ‘the best’…and if u r talking about success, I have a better option for u…a certain person named Pep Guardiola…at least he plays with the same philosophy as Fergie…but the most important thing is, Fergie should stay here for as long as he can…u r right that no one is bigger than the club, but that is applicable only when that person is no longer contributing as he should…Fergie still is…end of story…!

  9. Aj says:

When fergie leave I reckon it should be giggs or scholes to replace him. They haven’t got much experience with management but they no man utd like the back of there hand. The way they play and the future players so o reckon wen fergie hangs up his hairdryer it will be Gary Neville manager and giggs and scholes assitants then we will definitely have success fir nxt 20 yrs

Man Utd require managers on lifetime commitment not just medals!
    SAF set the precedent.
This loud mouth may help team win tournament but is every bit a VAGABOND!
He leaves nothing but SHIT after he departs.
    MANCHESTER UNITED WANT CONTINUITY.
He should join Manchester City instead!!!
