Wesley Sneijder

Will he? Wont he? The guessing games continue.

Okay, I’m sorry, I know the Sneijder rumours/saga/drama/stories are getting tedious but this one did make me think there may be some vailidity to the idea he could be on his way to United.

According to Internazionale’s official website Sneijder missed today’s training session due to ‘personal reasons’ and is also not named in their 20 man squad to face Olympiakos tomorrow.

There could be a justifable reason for it all of course, which doesn’t involve a transfer to United, or then again……

Don’t think wily scot Fergie will dip into the trasfer market before 31 August dateline. He’s quite confident that the quartet of Anderson, Cleverley, Carrick & Fletcher will be more than able to propel United to 20th league title.

On the European scene, it’s still just too much for United to win another European cup unless it’s not Barcelona that is the opposition in d final; else we won’t stand a chance against Xavi, Messi, Fabregas & co.

food for thought eh. as you say it could be something or nothing, but I know he didn’t get an injury the other day. Interestingly enough, Eto’o was made to train on his own, as is usual the case in this situation. Well I guess we’ll find out in the next few days/week or so whether fergie was bluffing, (as he has done before) when he told the press they can forget anyone they like.

Some the posts expose the weakness in the increasingly trendy argument that we do not need to buy because we have players in midfield already. As some of you have said, look at Barcelona. They had the best midfield in the world with Busquets, Iniesta and Xavi. They go out and spend £35 million on Fabregas and they already had a brilliant young midfielder in Thiago Alcantara. Fergie is a God but I do not agree that we have what it takes in the middle to be considered a truly great side. It may be that in two or three years time Pogba will be a world class player. We may even get 20 good games from him. I don’t know. What I do know is that we have lost Scholes and Hargraves. We need Sneijder. He provides something we do not have. Modric would be my preference but he wants to stay in London. But Sneijder will provide us with a dimension we lack. Personally I also think we need a defensive midfield player. In Europe 433 has been the successful formula. You cannot beat Barcelona with a 442 unless they have a very bad day. Sneijder, Anderson and a top defensive midfield player would give us a chance given the firepower we have up front and a defence that has proved to be solid over the years. To me it’s a no brainer. We are two players short in midfield.

Dead right, although I’m a little unsure on you opinion on formations. Barca’s midfield is out of this world, and so you’ve got two priorites: 1. Try to get as much possesion as you can. 2. When you do have posession, make use of it, and do not waste it. As such, our midfield is key – we’d need a world class distributor and a world class destroyer, neither of which I believe we have, at least at the moment.

Darren Fletcher is a great player, but can he go toe-to-toe with Xavi and Iniesta? Is he world class? I’d have to say no. We also lack the deep lying playmaker, a distibutor akin to Xabi Alonso, that is needed to make a 4-4-1-1 formation that we currently play work on the highest level. Sneijder is more than capable of filling this position and passing from deep, but would we be exposed with no world class anchorman?

When Barca have possesion, our adaptable 4-4-1-1 formation turns into more of a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1, with our No. 10 (Rooney) and the wingers dropping into mifield to aide tackling. When we’re in possesion however, Rooney operates in between the defence and midfield, and our Regista (Xabi Alonso) launches lightning quick counter attacks – the United way. The key positions in this formation that make or break it are the two central midfielders, who have to be world class. You’re 100% right when you suggest their missing form United’s play.

Insightful summary, nicely done, Steve. But given our exit from the CL I think our needs are later down the road. Scholes will be enough to compete for a pot this season and we’ll head into Summer needing 2 midfielders.

My assumption is that Ravel & Pogba will be off – damn shame – or I’d drop that to 1 midfielder.

If Schneider goes anywhere it will be to City as a swap for Carlito. What a lamentable fate!

United don’t need him, they have a young french kid with no top level experience and another kid with one year’s experience at wigan and the mighty carrick and the fat anderson and the virus-ridden fletcher. Keep the money in the glazer bank account and get yourself a bonus for doing so eh fergie.

I think he’s fallen out with the whole club and refusing to play for inter or train, an has asked for the move to Manchester United and now the 2 clubs are reaching a deal as we speak for him.
