Could Darron Gibson become key?

The return of Darron Gibson. Well it may not be too far off. Having made his return from a lengthy injury sustained in August just this week for the Manchester United reserve team, could Darron Gibson finally make the kind of meaningful impact that he had once hoped he would?

It wouldn’t be too surprising to know that Darron Gibson isn’t particularly a fans favourite. This is highlighted by the fact that he was hounded off twitter following the abuse that he recieved, hours after creating an account on it earlier this year. More supporters of Manchester United probably have Bébé’s name on their replica shirts than Gibson’s. Having made only 58 appearances for Manchester United by the age of 24 it is safe to say that he has never really been considered as a regular. Darron Gibson has never really had a decent run in the first team. With Tom Cleverley’s injury which has ruled him out until Christmas and Anderson’s dip in form coinciding with Darron Gibson’s return from injury, could Darron Gibson finally get a decent run in the first team?

It is not really news that Darron Gibson could have left Manchester United this summer. In fact, Sunderland had a bid accepted for Darron Gibson however this transfer eventually fell through. The manager santioning such a deal hints that Darron Gibson was seen as surplus to requirements but with recent deficiencies in the centre of midfield, will Sir Alex Ferguson see the availability of Darron Gibson as a godsend?

Probably not, but the option is there for him should he wish to use it. Personally, I’ve never thought that he was a particularly bad player. It is worth noting that with 10 goals in his 58 appearances for Manchester United, Darron Gibson does actually have the best goals per game ratio out of all the central midfielders. He has had some average performances for Manchester United, as have other central midfielders, but he has also had some stand-out games. The game vs Schalke in the Champions league semi final 2nd leg last season comes to mind. A brilliantly productive game for Darron Gibson, who scored 1 and assisted 1.

Another that comes to my mind is that game against Bayern Munich the season before when he opened the scoring. He has shown glimpses of what he is capable of against equally capable opposition and so if he is given a chance to show it on a more regular basis, is it too far-fetched to imagine that he will flourish?

Although admittedly I am not his biggest fan, I do believe that should he be given a chance, he will indeed flourish. As a player who has come up through the Manchester United youth system, I do not think that leaving Manchester United would be something that will appeal to him. The realisation of how close he came to leaving last summer may be somewhat of a wake-up call for Darron Gibson. I can’t envisige anything will spur him on more and so I do believe that, given the chance, Darron Gibson will make a meaningful impact at Manchester United.

Do you agree? Should Darron Gibson be given a run in the first team? Would it be better to give youth a chance ahead of him? Should Darron Gibson be sold as soon as possible? Feel free to comment below.

United is much better when Gibson is NOT in the team really.

    3. Absolutely YES, hence No on #2
    4. Yes

He`s been given enough chances, and given the fact that there are 2-3 occasions where he`s showing “glimpses”, are reasons enough. His highest performance level are just not good enough. What is his shots/goal ratio?

My main reason is however his lack of movability, which has been publicly commented as well by Mr. Trappatoni. He is a better on the ball than Flecthinho (who isn`t a very good footballer, but a decent enforcer/DM), but isn`t anywhere near as popular and useful as his team mate. He`s kind of similar to Lucas (LFC), without the defensive capabilities, and who would use such a player?!

He isn`t anywhere near the midfielders at Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle, who in average should have players with less special abilities than us.

He should be (which is reasonable to believe was the case in summer) sold to make way to players as Pogba, Morrison, Tunnicliffe and even Petrucci.

    Fully agree,
watched him against wigan reserves this week and along with Pogaba and Morrison looked very good.Seems fitter and quicker off the ball, plus his passing long and short was excellent!I am not a big fan but he impressed me enough to maybe change my mind.He needs to play and the up coming league matches would give him a decent run instead of Anderson, fletcher.Seems to up his game with quicker youngsters around him.

Fletcher, is a hard worker, not a great passer/tackler/goal threat or most things that a CM needs, but hiss fitness and work-rate made up for his weaknesses, since his illness Fletch doesn’t have that, therefore i don’t see any reason to play him until he has that back.
The majority of Gibson’s games have been playing along a weakened side and rarely has he been selected alongside the strongest 10 players, I’m glad he is still at the club as he couldn’t be any worse than whats been playing lately. Having to play Rooney in CM reeks of desperation. I would love to see Gibson get a chance and make an impact. it should be Carrick going in Jan due to his age and failure to live up to his price tag, what did Gibson cost the club again?????

When we debate if Gibson should have a run in the first team we know we have problems in midfield.

  5. rick says:

im getting the feeling gibsons going to do a fletcher. around that age fletcher was about to leave utd because he was plain rubbish, worse than gibson, but he stayed and became very crucial.
thats why i think gibsons transfer to sunderland fell through cos he has something to offer. he can pass he can shoot and i think this season will be a make or break for him. perfect chance with andos form, clevs injury and carrick n fletch abit rusty for gibson to make a statement.

    • Tonka Norris says:

Fletcher appeared to get better as our midfield started to decline; equally the paucity of talent makes even a Gibson return seem positive, and Clevs coming up is messiac. I wouldn’t shed a tear if we shipped out Fletch, Gibson and Ando as a job lot. Time for Pogba now or we lose him.

Lets call time on the passengers now.

  6. Tonka Norris says:

A complete waste of space. If there’s any call to gamble on midfield we should bring up Pogba, or Morrison. Gibson should have gone in the summer.

  7. Philip k says:

Doesn’t deserve the stick he gets from fans . Ok so he is a little trigger happy with shooting but I’d be inclined to think he must put them away on the training ground to want to shoot so often in games,.. Maybe just needs to relax and feel more confident in his own ability and not have to force it so much. The abuse he got on twitter was disgraceful… No player deserved that treatment no matter how shut they are.. I’d like to see him step and put in a few decent performances if only to secure himself a decent transfer in the summer.. He deserves a chance to show his value which he might not get at united..

  8. Peter says:

Gibson is muck, I know it’s a while since we had quality midfielders but really are things gone this bad? The guy is not even Premier League standard, which is why Sunderland tried to buy him! He can’t move or tackle. He can’t even get into a team with an average midfield. Surely Ravel or Pogba are worth a run instead of this guy.

  9. Lionel says:

As much as I don’t like Gibson I am willing to give him a chance since we have gotten nothing out of the out of the centre since Cleverly got injured

  10. rick says:

to be honest pogbas overated, any1 can set the reserves alight. few years back it was gibson and this other lad called magnus eikrem. every1 thought he was going to be the next star but what happened? he ended up in a c*@p team. i dont see anything special in pogba but 1 things for sure he will NEVER make it at utd

    • STWB says:

I know it`s not directly comparable, but Mr. Eikrem was recently voted young player of the year in Norway, being a central figure to Solskjær and his team winning their first title ever. And he had his first call up to the national team this week….
