The youngsters lack of goals was not an issue for Sir Alex

Anyone that’s ever read anything I’ve written will probably know I’m just a bit fond of a certain Longsight-born striker who’s performances have been one of the reasons United finished the season as Champions.

Danny Welbeck is something of a divisive figure among many Reds as there are those like myself who appreciate the job he does for the side, often played out of position, while others point to his lacklustre goal scoring record and awkward style.

It’s gotten to the point that even something as positive as a Young PFA player of the season nomination for Welbeck can be met with criticism by some United fans, such is the feeling of negativity from some towards him. The main point of contention Reds have with Welbeck’s inclusion in the side is his lack of goals, two in all competitions in the last campaign was scant return for a player of his talents.  Welbeck is a striker and has never been suited to the left wing, yet has been forced to play there for several reasons, a lack of consistent options, his energy and skill which bring something valuable to the side and also an ability to defend from the front when the Reds face a strong right flank.

Sir Alex Ferguson has known Welbeck since he was nine years old, has seen him overcome his injury problems as a growing teenager- Osgood-Slatters disease has scuppered many a budding career- and always valued his contribution regardless of goals. It wasn’t that long ago that the former United boss- I’ll never get used to that- lost patience somewhat with a journalist who asked if Welbeck’s lack of goals was a cause for concern. “He’s contributing to the team, I don’t see your point,” was Ferguson’s curt reply.

The worrying factor for Welbeck is that David Moyes may not have similar views to Sir Alex, he could easily be less than willing – just as many fans are- to persevere with a player on the wing who’s obviously not a natural there. Should Moyes decide – quite rightly- that Welbeck  is a striker and not suited out wide, then the England hit man may find his chances limited. If Welbeck finds himself used sparingly its vital he takes the chances he’s given, other wise he may find the new manager isn’t as fond of him as the old one.

I’d hate to see Welbeck leave but next season could be a pivotal one for him and should he struggle to silence the critics and fail to impress his new boss than a player that could become a United legend, may just find himself surplus to requirements.

Does Welbeck need to get amongst the goals next season? Is his future secure? Feel free to comment suggest and abuse below:

Very rightly so… I have never been a fan of Wellbeck. The writer is right on the money with this article here. The way he plays, I don’t foresee him getting 10 goals. Rather see Hernandez on the pitch instead. At least Hernandez is a genuine goal threat. Let’s face it. A striker who doesn’t score is a liability. He’s like a teen version of Emile Heskey, adequate in support but ultimately hopeless as a goal scorer. Should sell him while his stock is still up. Wellbeck was lucky as all our wingers were crap last season. I believe that Moyes will not have the patience. He’s got the cash, finally and on top of that he can’t mess up in his first season. If new classy midfielder and winger comes in, a whole list of senior players will be in trouble. Nani, Young, Valencia, Wellbeck, Cleverly, Anderson; even Rooney and Carrick would not be automatic choices anymore.

Watch out guys. This is the season before the mass culling begins. SAF was old school who was untouchable because of his record haul of trophies. Moyes would be under pressure to get results and if he can sack the entire title winning backroom staff, then none of the players would be safe.

So Wellbeck, maybe another successful loan spell might help.

Danny is a great player who has got d skills d ability to improvise contribute despite always played out of position in most games . Let’s jst give him a fair trial he is gonna give us his best

foward just need clinical finish…such as van persie, chicarito, angelo henriquez..so its time for welbeck to leave united!

      • Honestly mate says:

He’s had a fair trial!!! Why should we be fair?!? Is it fair that a talentless footballer should be payed 80k a week for not doing his job properly! Manchester United owes average players nothing!!! Surely the only reason he is still there (and cleverley!) is because it fills up homegrown player slots. Welbeck scored 2 goals and made 3 accurate crosses all season!!! Just wow. Every united fan that wants him there for his footballing ability is a moron! There are so many united fans that there’s bound to be a lot of morons. Morons that spell “the” as simply “d”. We will have to stick you up front with welbeck and watch as we drop down the table, just because welbeck deserves a future at united!

    he better leave united…
he like to hold ball for long time, not suitable with team game

Any Utd fan who thinks we need to sell welbeck doesn’t know a thing about football (an there’s a lot of them). This guy is playing left wing most games an he’s not shy in tracking back so he’s not likely to bang in the goals. But hopfully with the signing of zaha he can be used as a striker an get 15 plus goals. He got 10 plus the season before last !!

Fucks him,we tired of him but ferguson helps to be until dis day,I know moyes could be tired of him as iam, manu fans tired of rumours we need to signe quality players…..

    Welbeck will inprove next season

  6. Lexxy says:

I have often maintain that he will end up like Ebanks Blake and Frazer Campbell and nothing has change to dispel that thought.
An average player , that’s all!

sorry to say that, but a lot of you guys just don’t get what football is about.
welbeck didn’t play as an orthodox winger last season. he was part of a very fluid forward line, dropping, picking up the ball, distributing, running into space.
i was totally in awe when i saw him against madrid. not because of his goal, which was vital, but in no way anything extraordinary, but because of his overall play.
he was maybe the best player of the two legs combined.
his touch was brilliant, his bursts and link up play where the reason united hit madrid on the counter (until nani got sent off) so hard, that i went from ‘this is some really good counter play’ to ‘madrid haven’t found a proper solution yet’ to ‘they are scared, they really are…’.
he spoilt one counter attack, which maybe cost united in the end, but apart from that he had everyone in his pocket.

his physique already is insane and his first touch and passing at the end of the season was miles apart from rooney or chicharito.
welbeck was the key to united’s most fluent football this season. that’s something neither nani, young, valencia, hernandez or (sad to say) rooney can claim.

Because welbeck was played out of position doesn’t mean I shld only score 2goals all season,a lot of out players r played out of position but they still got goals.welbeck gets in good goal scoring opportunity but hw jst doesn’t seem to score.

He sucks. Clumsy, horrible finisher. He fails the easiest of chances. Again a striker’s role is to score. Even though he eas used on the wing he still tended to drift to the center and had dozens of scoring opportunities that he failed to get in the scoresheet. Against real madrid he played great but again 2 goals in 39 games is pitiful for an offensive player like himself. Another emile heskey
