Suddenly Croatia's games will look a lot more interesting to Reds

United have tabled a bid for Spurs playmaker Luka Modric according to the Sun’s Neil Custis, who claims the North Londoners are ready to sell one of their prized assets.

The Sun notes:

Boss Alex Ferguson has offered Tottenham a £25million fee, rising to £30m based on appearances and success.

Modric, 26, will be handed a four-year deal worth £26m.

His wages of £125,000 a week will put him among the big earners at Old Trafford.

Modric has kept up to date with talks while at Euro 2012 with Croatia and will seal the move on his return.

This will be music to many United fans ears- if it turns out to be true, which admittedly is a big ‘if’, as many see the Croatian as the only real contender to take over from Paul Scholes.

The fee being quoted seems realistic without being insulting to Spurs nor over-the-top for a player with very little re-sale value should he complete three of his four year contract.

My only concern with this deal -again should it be true- is that it could spell the end for Tom Cleverley, a player who at the beginning of last season, looked destined to take United to another level.

Although most fans would rather see Modric over Cleverley, I still can’t help but feel diminutive young Yorkshireman may still have a bright future at Old Trafford if he can just avoid serious injury.

All this is pure conjecture of course as there’s no evidence yet that the Sun’s story is even true, but if you want you  can read it in full here:

Listen, let us nip this in the bud straight away. First, Daniel Levy will not sell Luka to you lot after the Berbatov incident, he promised that to Spurs fans in 2008, that you would ave no more of our players, whilst he was chairman. Second, he will not be sold to ANY English rival. Third, it would certainly not be for 25m, and anything above that is no longer in your price range, due to the Glazer debt burden, I would even doubt that you could reach the 25m! Fourth(our fave number)Do you honestly belive that there are going to be “rising” bonuses in a deal for a player approaching 27! And lastly, not only is Custis one of your fans, the whole paper is the voice of Old Traford, the sir alex ferguSUN they are always at this caper, trying to unsettle players at fellow British clubs, but Taggart, news for you, THOSE DAYS ARE GONE! NO CHANCE!

Awaste of money, Modric has never done anything against United and never had a good game. This club would be to big for him. Anyway why would you want 3 small lightweight midfielders its not sensible. A better bet would be Fellaini of Everton to help out in defence and to give relief to Carrick and Scholes

  3. Trevor says:

Its time Fergie was bringing in a defensive midfielder because we know what happened last year when Scholes retired and he was relying on Cleverley which did not work out. Surely he wont make the same mistake and not bring in a defensive midfielder because if anything happened to Carrick United would be up the creek without a paddle.

I see Fergie has his tapper uppers starting early this Summer.

I wouldn’t be suprised to see Modric leave Spurs this Summer. However it will be for significantly more than £25 million. Chelsea’s last bid a year ago was £32 million plus Alex (apparently valued at £8 million). My guess is that £35 million in cash may well be enough to persuade Harry and Levy to sell. Although it wouldn’t surprise me to see Spurs sell Modric for £5 million less than that to an overseas club. Personally I think the way that he retains the ball would be perfect for Barcelona as an heir apparent for Xavi.

If a player hands in a 2nd transfer request in 2 years, it’s about time to sell. I know that Spurs is not a selling team anymore neither is man united and they still had to let go of Ronaldo. You don’t want a player in your team who doesn’t want to be there, it’s not good for moral and especially if he is as important to the team as Modric is to Spurs.
If they get 30+ i think they should sell. Modric will turn 27 at the beginning of next season and a potential buyer, offering him a 4-year deal have no real re-sale value.
In my view they have two options; sell him this year for highest bid over 25m or hold him against his will for another year and have a very unhappy player and all the media-drama that comes with it.

Tottenham have always been adamant that there NEVER was a transfer request, and even if there were, it would make no difference to the outcome. It was a tabloid invention, repeated by lazy journalists, trying to ramp up the story

That’s a well reasoned argument, although I don’t know if Modric ever actually submitted a transfer request last year. Nevertheless he clearly wanted to leave at one point. Whether he will hand in a transfer request this year is pure conjecture, but even if he does Levy is not the kind of guy who is going to roll over and let him leave on his terms and after last year Modric will be well aware of that fact! In addition to which, even if Modric were to adamantly demand a transfer again, there is well documented acrimony between Ferguson and Levy and the only way he would possibly go to Utd is if SAF is willing and able to meet Levy’s asking price, which will not be less than 35 million. In my opinion Modric is not worth that and I think SAF would be of the same opinion. Therefore, inspite of the fact that the story is complete fabrication anyway, I think the likelihood of it happening is almost non-existent!

  6. Dont Ask says:

Bit of a non-story this one i reckon!
But then again maybe, just maybe Modric knew Sir Alex wanted him last year and his mind was already made up making the Chelsea (Unconfirmed) bid totally irrelevant. Levy said one more year please Modric and if we dont qualify for champs league…you can go! Would have thought £35 mil rising to £40 would be more realistic tho

  7. Dazbomber says:

99% of players want to play for United the other 1% are liars get use to that , he’s on his way .

    • Tony says:

Does that include Gascoigne, Batistuta, Shearer, Anderton,Ronaldinho, Sneijder who all turned Utd down at least twice. In the case of Batistuta it was an annual event to turn down Manure.

      • salford red or dead says:

funnily enough tony, every single one of those players have since expressed regret at turning mufc down.

Nothong is inporsible,it is true that spour rejected 40,0000000bid from chealse last season, and even reject 35,000,000 from remadrid this season, maybe that time spour never ready to sall modric or modric never ready to go, maybe now is the time

  9. LT3313 says:

    player will definitely leave.

  10. Dazzer says:

Spurs rejected £30 + Alex (£10m) last season. He’s a year older and he wasn’t as good last season. £25 -£30m is what he’s worth. Spurs fans that say he’s worth £40m+ are delusional. In that case I’d prefer M’Vila or Strootman who would cost <£20m.
