Do I need to point out it wasn't a defeat?

Daily Express take the De Gea criticism a bit far

It Seems with the general media clamour to blame United’s young goalkeeper David De Gea for the draw against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, some of them are getting a tad carried away. I’m no mathematician but I’m pretty sure when your team scores the same amount of goals as the opposition in a Premier League game of association football then that’s classed as a draw and not a ‘defeat’.

I understand the fact that a defeat would be more dramatic but surely even the most ambitious journalist cannot expect United fans- or the general public – not to notice that the Reds didn’t actually lose. It seems the zeal to chastise De Gea has now gotten so great newspapers are willing to re-write history to do so. Not since the ‘We Won 1-1″ headline of the New York Post following the USA national sides draw with England can I remember such an erroneous headline.

  1. We droped to very important points, so yes we lost the game thanks for the mistake we did when we signied a very young goalkeeper instead of an expirianced one.

  2. up until that goal DDG was possibly the MoM. and Vidic really didn’t do him any favours by blocking hes path to the ball. but DDG’s an easy target ‘lets blame the young keeper’ lets forget that Vidic blocked him and that Evra was out of position to stop the ball being played in.
He’s young and still learning he’s trade and gonna make mistakes but i think he’s got the makings of a truly world class keeper.

Why is it always like this?we do not count on their successes but we always dwell on their faults, for me and some of my Man.Utd’fans in Nigeria,DE GEA is the best keeper right now in the EPL,seconded by Lindingard, these Lads are too much, our problem is not keeper, but lack of focus and concentration of our defenders.SAF should strengthen his defence in order tn expect good results from his Keepers.Every EPL fan is aware that Man utd does not have keeper’s problem, because our keepers presently are doing us proud. Up Man Utd forever.

it’s really funny to blame degea,d lad was the reason we even got the draw.why cant we notice that valencia is now as good as nothing and his inclussion realy caused tenssion on our defence which vida and co couldnt handle.i think the idea of bringing on valencia cost us,fergie lost it at that point.

Not De Gea bashing here. Just commenting on the use of language.

The word ‘defeat’ is used figuratively. He probably meant that the goal resulted in such devastating impact that it is like a defeat. Similarly, the word ‘won’ as quoted from New York Post has the same meaning, that a draw in the eyes of the USA team is a huge result against England, hence they ‘won’. Either that, or events in the game had seen the USA team ‘won’ England in certain aspect, despite the result being a draw.

I’m sure a lot of readers know this, so why the need to use it to create a story?

Less see dis as nonsense k de gea is a wonderful goal stopper nt even a keeper so let us see him as a gud goal keeper we er forcing him 2 live d club if he is nt a gud keeper y wil big clubs wnt him like Madrid, Barcelona

shut up Gary, that boy save the Manchester ass in that game

If Hart of late, was under the same level of scrutiny he would have been plying his trade at Bolton. He has come for and mishandled a number of crosses in the past few months – Vorm never leaves his line for a cross and yet we only hear good things about him.. ABUT

This whole De Gea things is so blown out of proportion. He’s only young, we as humans all make mistakes, the game was a team effort where was the team?

    I mean come on.

Right look at his shot stopping ability, its incredible and especially for his age! He stops shots with a maturity like Casillias or Neuer.
He has a long way to go, and a lot of time to do so, yes he failed to punch it out, but all this hype isnt needed.

Papers go on about his singular faults but look at the shots he stopped in the Spurs match. Look at how the papers went on about his punch, but i didn’t see much about Joe Hart’s incredible header outside of the box that lead to Ibrahemovics goal against England, and that was the stupidest thing i’ve ever seen! Joe hart must have thought he was a defender, and de gea gets criticised for a failed punch? Wtf?! I’m sure every goalkeeper has failed to punch it or grab it at pivotal points in games leading to goals. Just get off his back.
